Fondue tour ends with accident and 16 injured

First there was fondue, then there was a crash: In a Oldtimerfahrt a steam train in Sihlbrugg ZH crashed into a construction vehicle. This was apparently parked in the wrong place.
Photo spread in large format "

Whether that can again be repaired provided? The bent buffer, severely dented the sheet. Much intact, however translucent front of the steam railcar to be. What caused the accident, is clarified. Chess damage amounts estimated initially at CHF 500,000. The platform at the door of the damaged Nostalgiezugs. The Rigi fondue journey ended with a total of 16 injured persons injured; including two train drivers. In addition, two people were seriously injured medium - 40 came with a fright. Close the damaged train. Fritz Bernhauser, employees of the Research Service of the Zurich City Police, suspected: "The high material damage because the cars has pushed by the impact on the two buffer head of steam railcar away in its rear part." "Driving with a steam engine is an experience very special, "says Marianne Christians (44). It is nostalgia train lover all my heart and a member of the association Zurich Museum Railway. The Federal Service for accident investigation will investigate the accident in Sihlbrugg. The damage to the car is substantial. The damaged Nostalgiezug in Sihlbrugg Station. From this position, it acts in its old glory. The front end, however, is destroyed. The cab of the steam railcar. Throughout the entire floor is coal - the cab is fouled. Probably a line in the accident has sprung a leak, and runs out. In the back of the steam railcar is a flyer of the steam group Zurich. This ballast cars Nostalgiezug collided. Are clearly visible on the buffer heads of the ballast car ... ... on closer inspection, the green paint residues of Nostalgiezugs. Shortly after 23:00 bounced the green vintage train in the abgestellen Schotterwagen. (20 February 2016) Several rescuers from several cantons were summoned. In addition, were specialists of SBB and the Association of steam train on site. As a result of the collision derailed the passenger cars. Because the train accident and the cleanup occurred Zugsverspätungen of about 20 minutes.

    On the subject

Train accident in Bavaria: Could such a disaster happen in Switzerland?

With the historic steam railcar CZm 1/2 31 of the association steam group Zurich plus a nostalgic, rented from the Zurich Museum Railway Wagon drove a 50-member tour group on Saturday morning from Zurich main station to Arth-Goldau.

There, the company moved to a historic steam train of Rigibahn. Your goal: Rigi-Kulm. At the highest point of the Queen of the Mountains waited an aperitif and cheese fondue - the Rigi fondue ride is a classic in the club life.

On the return trip shortly after 23 o'clock it happened: After the nostalgic train at Sihlbrugg ZH station had a "refueling" for water inserted, it bounced during extension in a parked Schotterwagen.

    Half a million damage

Fortunately, the classic car recorded a spokesman for the Zurich cantonal police only "very slow" on the go. Nevertheless, were the impact a total of 16 people were injured; including two train drivers. Two people were seriously injured medium, 40 came with a fright.

Some of the wounded could leave the hospital already again. The rescuers were having a massive contingent on site. The damage is estimated the police spokesman on around half a million francs.

    Drivers made no mistakes

it is indeed for very accurate conclusions about the cause of the accident still too early, said Christoph Kupper, Head of trains and ships in the safety investigation authority (SUST), compared to the news agency sda. Still had interviews to conduct.

However hard stand now that the two engine driver of the steam train made a mistake and would have had a green light. By contrast, the ballast cars had been parked in a wrong place and have impeded the free passage of the train.

When SUST one assumes that mid week evidence-present; For example, about why the gravel car was in the wrong place. Until the final report is published, can still take months.

    Big concern at web-friends

At least for the high damage has Fritz Bernhauser who was on Sunday afternoon at the scene, a possible explanation: ". This has arisen because the cars has pushed by the impact on the two buffer head of steam railcar away in its rear part," The 70-year-old spent 18 years as an employee of the Scientific service of the Zurich city police and is infatuated by its own account in railways.

Even Marianne Christen (44) and her boyfriend Peter Vollmer (63) are nostalgic train lovers from the heart: "Driving with a steam engine is an experience of a special kind." Although the two were not on the fondue ride it, they visited the damaged train on Sunday but from concern. For Vollmer the damage to the steam railcar is particularly painful: "That I have even applied for repair hand before."

As a result of the accident, the distance between the train and Thalwil from late Saturday night was only limited passable. There were delays of around 20 minutes.

    Private trips in peak times

According to SBB are private clubs with their trains, especially in off-peak hours and on weekends go to the SBB network. Do the clubs an operating license from the Federal Office of Transport, you can also book trips at SBB.

"It is then worked out a road map," tell SBB spokesman Christian Ginsig on request of sda. In this case, everything was in order in this regard.

This is a wonderful steam Railcar that I've travelled on several times
The most recent was. RTC charter Zurich to Zug circular- other times at galas
It was v tempting to go on this trip as there was also steam on the Rigi/fondue but it clashed with the SDR gala- it was 1450 vs Swiss steam railmotor- a long day at a v fair price. Advertising started last autumn.
It generally runs with a trailer and is based in the Zurich area
Going out of the HUGE Zurich Hbf is a quite extraordinary experience

The group running it are very dedicated and I read this story with extreme sadness

If anyone hasn't opened the link with the correct picture, this link will give more information. Plus a picture from the early 1980's on the Uetliberg line.

    Cheers, Neil

Even I wouldn't translate a bit of German as "Oldtimerfahrt". :) I think they mean "heritage trip".

Could it be the Swiss German equivalent of Franglais? The latter has an equally delicious expression for "tramdriver" as "wattman"!

Elsewhere they refer to 'Fonduefahrt' which sounds like great fun :)

Particularly when you consider that fondue can be a hot gloopy liquid.

Repairs on the SBB steam motor railcar are progressing well at the RhB workshop in Landquart and the vehicle should be back in steam on the Swiss main line later this year.
Initial trials are expected for the spring and some tours have been penciled in for the summer. Pictures of this unique unit and Swiss main line imagery can be found under the following link too: https://newrailwayreport.blogspot.com
