I think I have seen some drone videos where the operator recorded sound from the ground - obviously, from a slightly different spot otherwise the sound of the drone would be caught but probably about the best compromise you can get.

I believe there are some rules about using these drones which operators need to consider - they are, I think, classed as "mini-aircraft" (I certainly recall the Police need CAA permission for similar surveillance drones).

EDIT - found a link to one but computer refuses to past You-Tube links this morning! Sound is recorded from the ground, directly below I think!

Would it not be possible to digitally edit the sound recording to remove or greatly reduce the drone motor noise?

Though for tracking shots (such as the S15 in that film) presumably you'd want a constant sound, whereas if you recorded from one spot, the sound would rise and then fall? As always I guess, new technology introduces new things to think about!

Judging by the coaching stock and the wedding headboard on the S15, that film was shot last Saturday. I wonder if any of the crew noticed the drone?

Ha - pretty much every train video with music has someone saying 'the music is terrible'. It doesn't matter what kind it is, classical, rock, whatever, every. single. time.

To paraphrase an editor I know - 'The best way to reduce hissing, whining, or buzzing is to record the sound without it'

I believe you need, or will shortly need, a licence to fly drones on a commercial basis. Small ones like the Parrot can be flown by hobbyists. We've used several on shoots, ranging in size and payload, and the laws are catching up to the tech, probably quite rightly.

Like others have said, I had no idea that it was possible to get such a high quality film from such a small drone.

Thanks Paul. Now I know what loco I'm on on Sunday! Interesting that the U-boat will have a lighter load than the H ;-)

In 2013 the Bluebell Railway fitted a lining to the inside of sections of Sharpthorne Tunnel, to prevent the build up of ice on the railhead, and icicles forming from the tunnel roof, to ensure we can continue to run steam trains through the tunnel to East Grinstead in cold weather.

This video tells the story of the work, explaining what has been done and how.

Our thanks to Alex Mansfield and David Allen for shooting and producing this video.

Presumably the tunnel lining will have to be removed periodically for brickwork inspection ? Will that be easy to do ?

Not really my field, but the film shows that the lining is bolted to the framework, so presumably if necessary it could be unbolted.

There is also a gap between the lining and the tunnel wall so I wonder (but don't know) if some kind of remote camera could also be used to inspect the brickwork without removing the panels.

Today was the 20th anniversary of opening of the line to Kingscote. This video records the event, and the construction of the line between New Coombe Bridge and Kingscote.

I have an old and probably unique document from around 1915-1916. It is an LB&SCR track plan of East Grinstead showing both high and low levels stations. The document has been annoted by hand to show arrangements for the simultaneous loading of up to three troop and horse trains utilising the two station goods yards presumably destined for the western front via the channel ports. It is interesting not just for the detailed track plan itself but for the significance of its use.
I have tried to offer this as a free permanent loan to the Bluebell Museum and have emailed the museum using the address given on the Bluebell website but have received no reply.
I'm not sure whether it is of no interest but I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm the email address of the curator. If there isn't any interest from the railway I will probably sell it on eBay.

Quick reminder about the next two special events:

May 10/11: Southern at War, with Spitfire and Harvard flypasts, re-enactments, military vehicles etc. - http://www.bluebell-railway.com/event/southern-at-war-weekend/

May 17/18: Edwardian Weekend, with the old carriages in service and a traditional funfair etc. - http://www.bluebell-railway.com/event/edwardian-weekend/

The Bluebells are in full bloom right now, and may hang on until at least the Southern at War event!

This weekend is Service 2 with dining trains each day so three or four locos in steam each day.

Further details about the Southern at War event, May 10/11:

Basic service each day is three train (A/B/C as follows):

    A - Bulleids / Mark1s, hauled by 847
B - Maunsell / SR non-corridor set (5 coach - I assume the 100 seater must be in the works), hauled by 1638
    C - Mets / 4 wheelers / LSWR brake, hauled by 263

There will be a pilot engine at Sheffield Park both days - rostered as Fletcher Jennings No. 3 "Baxter" on Sunday. There's nothing rostered Saturday on the loco roster, but the traffic notice says there should be a pilot.

There is no lunchtime Golden Arrow / Wealden Rambler, so the three train service will run all day, as follows:

    Set A - Dep. SP 09:45 / 12:15 / 2:45 / 5:15 and Dep. EG 10:40 / 1:15 / 3:45 / 6:15
    Set C - Dep. SP 10:20 / 12:50 / 3:20 and Dep. EG 11:23 / 1:53 / 4:23
    Set B - Dep SP 11:00 / 1:30 / 4:00 and Dep. EG 12:00 / 2:30 / 5:00

Same timetable both days, including the late Set A service on Sunday evening.

    Full timetable: http://www.bluebell-railway.com/event/4-train-timetables/

Spitfire Mk IX display around 2pm on Saturday at HK (http://www.bluebell-railway.com/event/2-spitfire-display/) ; Harvard display on Sunday (http://www.bluebell-railway.com/event/3-harvard-display/).

Attractions at Sheffield Park, Horsted Keynes, East Grinstead.

Incidentally, with regards the "specialist burns unit" display at East Grinstead: during the war, Sir Archibald McIndoe, who pioneered plastic surgery to treat badly burned airmen, was based at East Grinstead, so many recovering servicemen came through the town. Earlier in the year, the Bluebell ran at fundraising trip on the Golden Arrow to raise money towards a permanent memorial.
