French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has issued a statement in which it says the company has not been informed of any approaches US giant General Electric (GE) to buy the company.

Alstom said it has not been “informed of any potential public tender offer for the shares of the company” following press reports suggesting that GE is currently discussing a €13 billion buyout with the French government.

The rumour was initially reported by Bloomberg but has since been carried by several major news outlets.

Alstom said: “The group constantly reviews the strategic options of its businesses.

“Alstom plans to communicate as scheduled on May 7 its annual results and will use this opportunity to give an update on the prospects of its activities.”
