The "Knotty Trust" are on the last lap of the restoration of NSR coaches No's 61 & 127. We have made our own lighting drawings and the interior "oil" ( LED ) lamps are looking very good.

We think however that our prototype oil vent ( bucket ) is to small, we had a re think today looking at photos and scale. We have come up with a diameter of 14" - I wonder if anyone knows how this compares with other 1870's coaches ?.

I have a drawing of a B & E Second that shows an oil pot, & the scale suggests that 14" is about right:

It was originally printed as part of D.K. Clark's 'Railway Machinery', first published in 1855.

Many thanks, there are no "Knotty" coach drawings of the period hence the question. We tried 14" oil pots ( upturned plastic bucket ! ) on the coaches yesterday and checked against photos of the period, I think that we are on the right track.

    Thank you again.

No probs, might be worth contacting the Bluebell... http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/cw_news/106.html ...looks as though someone has confected some new ones :)

One thing that differs from the B&E drawing is that they've fitted them with the hinges & catches in line with the coach. The B&E drawing shows them as being transverse, as does this one of a GW Y.2 Fruit van:

This pic in Nick Baxter's (813 Fund) Flickr album of GWR BG convertible No 817 might be of interest too:

Note the 'tripod' affair next to the oil pot. This is assumed to be a stand for the lamp unit to enable it to be filled and/or trimmed in situ (or as near as). I haven't found a drawing that shows this feature as yet, but it's one of those things that's easily retro-fitted.

Can't tell you when Bolton beat Derby 4-1 though :D

    Pete.
