OK so it's not a UK tour, but it was steam. No story, timings or logs, just some record photos of some of the locos used. The brochure listed 17, 1 did not appear but had a substitute, two ran hot boxes but being double headed, limped on until could be conveniently removed. So 16 different steam, several heritage diesels and electric as well, all in 9 hectic days.

And your NP roving reporter caught the tour in Verona. Notice the gricer regulation shorts for warm weather!

    And the gricer guts.....

Short video clip, made a big mistake, took the wrong camera with me, HD and all that but no input for external mic... Won't make that error again, pics OK but sound pretty hopeless.

Some quality motive power there Ralph. 01 202 is a beauty. Got her on a run from Neustadt (Weinstrasse) to Heilbron and back in 2014.

Yes, 202 went well, and 78.618 and 38.1308 put in some spirited running as well, but some of the others are shall we say, well past their sell by date and in need of some TLC.

Pity the train was the wrong way round at this point and I was at the back, but leaning out just the same as those at the front... :) Nice pics though despite not getting me in shot....:(

I am bemused by the motion on the mogul http://www.national-preservation.com/attachments/_1000283-jpg.22851/
It appears to have outside Walchaerts valve gear and valves but inside cylinders, with the bottom end of the combination lever driven from an additional return crank.
Am I right? Does anyone know the story behind that arrangement?

Yes, outside valve gear but inside connecting rods. No idea why! Both 625 and the larger wheeled 640 moguls had the same arrangement. Seems to work though, 625.100 wasn't technically withdrawn until 1998!

There were also some Caprotti fitted 625s, and some Crosti boilered ones, classed 623. There were also Crosti boilered, Caprotti fitted 623s!

One of the Caprotti 625s, 625.308, is currently being overhauled at Pistoia, near Florence, but the overhaul is taking a while.

On this class of loco's the left hand side ,valve gear has two return cranks plus a expansion link ,one crank going to combination lever ,one to the expansion link ,the right hand side valve gear has no expansion link and only one return crank. On this side the return crank joins the radius rod with a short rod just before valve spindle.
Most Italian lines were laid with a very light rails , for general purpose loco's this arrangement ,with inside cylinders ,allowed loco's to be built with the lightest possible frames.

Video now up, nothing fancy, just various clips from on board and some of the various run pasts, false starts and false arrivals.

That seems to mean normal variable cutoff on the left side but fixed cutoff on the right side, which makes it even weirder than I thought.
