Where will there be standard gauge centenarians and older in steam in 2016?
Of those expected in service this year, which are in pre-grouping livery?
And can any be coupled to a train of the same or similar antiquity (let's say pre-grouping) from the same railway in a matching livery?
I say standard gauge because obviously the Ffestiniog, Talyllyn, IoM and others could manage this any day!

Thread should of course be pre-1917, i.e. up to Dec 1916!

3 (Captain Baxter, from 1877) B473, 178, 323, 263, 592 on the Bluebell. Three of the four Chatham engines are in pre-grouping livery, though only a couple of appropriately-liveried carriages, and a few wagons are in SECR livery.

Three on the Isle of Wight - A1/x W8 & W11and O2 W24. W8 is 140 years old this year. They will run matched with coaching stock from 150+ to 90+ years old.

Am I right in thinking all of these locos and stock are in post-1923 liveries, as presumably they didn't move to the island until later? Sorry for my ignorance of IoW matters.

Middleton will have three centenarian locos available for traffic in 2016. They are N.E.R. Cl. H no 1310 in N.E.R. livery and Manning Wardle Cl. L 0-6-0ST's, nos 1210 & 1601. No matching period rolling stock, I'm afraid.

What a fantastic roll-call! I guess that is where the Bluebell has the edge with old time mainline locos, a completely unique collection.
How likely is it so see more than one of these locos on steam on a normal visit in 2016? I understood there was a move to larger (younger) locos since reaching EG?

Yes that is correct, they are presented in the liveries that they carried whilst in service on the Island.

At weekends, you'll normally get 3 or 323 on station pilot; one of 263, 592 or B473 on the "A" service train and possibly a second of those three on the lunchtime dining train or afternoon cream tea train. So you are pretty well guaranteed to see at least one, and maybe up to three, running on any weekend. This weekend it is B473, 323 and I think 592 out - keep an eye on the Bluebell loco roster. The only exception (apart from special events) to getting at least one of them on a service train is in the absolute peak summer season when we may run two big locos.

The two terriers and one of the 4 wheel coaches (the North London composite) came to the island in pre-grouping times. Although they are currently in SR livery all three have carried pre-grouping (FYNR, IWCR & IWR as appropriate) liveries for a time since they arrived at Havenstreet. The current SR livery for these three gives authentic well matched trains. The O2 is in BR livery and matches the more modern bogie vehicles which are presented in authentic SR green, BR green & BR red.

Both of which worked the line before preservation (as did the P-class, currently in bits).
