Another longer selection of scenes, together with general traffic, just brings back memories of shadowing the line in September last year, on a tour of California.

The gradients in places have to be seen to be believed, its no wonder they get down to a crawl.

Think UP did a great job getting in the spirit of the occasion , using UP 4014 and UP 4884 as power -- they could be hauling freight somewhere .

Since the video was made I believe the diesel era maintenance platforms have been/are being removed to allow better access to the steam locos. Also, according to the latest "Trains" magazine, UP Northern 844 will be back in action for 2015. Ray.

I hope that you are right but my hopes are low for 844, 3985, 4014 currently. Many people here in the US feel this way as well. To go further into detail would be like opening a big can of worms. Your best bets would be on 611, 630, 765, 4501 in the east and 4449, 3751 and soon 2926 in the West. Until Union Pacific gets it act together don't expect 844 out on the road. Sorry to put a damper on you. Sad but true

When is 611 likely to be ready? Does this mean we could see the return of 1218, as well?

I don't know about 1218. 611 should be ready this summer. People from 20 foriegn countries have contributed towards her overhaul in addition. 1218 Would need far more work to be returned to operation. Many of the parts would need to be manufactured to get the A back on the road.

Well, it looks like there are some really interesting developments in the US over the next few years, with the possibility of 7 engines back on the main in the next 2 years and another 3 within the next 5 years, maybe. Could we be seeing a return to the golden age of the 80s and 90s for US fan trips. The J is probably the most exciting for me because I have so many old videos about the N and W steam program.
