<br />
What is the general process when starting away with a steam loco? Full forward 75% cutoff and then feather the regulator for the first few valve cycles then shut drain cocks and alter reverser down to around 50%?<br />
<br />
Obviously this will depend on light engine, gradient, class of loco, etc. but any general explanation much appreciated. <br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I have just been watching a video of 2968 and 7325 (SVRs Stanier and Collet Moguls) double heading on the mainline back in 1997 when air brakes were not even considered. 2968 was leading. My question is in this senario, double heading a vac braked train with a GWR loco as the train engine, how are the brakes managed.<br />

In FR practice at least the leading engine manages the brakes of a double header and the train engine dosen&#039;t run its ejector. If, when running like this, 2968 is controlling...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I&#039;ve only recently noticed that inside cylinder six coupled locomotives have the wheel balance weights in the &#039;wrong&#039; place. I don&#039;t know how I missed it all these years.<br />
With an outside cylinder locomotive, the connecting rod big end is always concentric with the coupling rod bearing, so the balance weight is opposite.<br />
I understand that with inside cylinders, there is no such restriction and the designer can put the big ends anywhere on the crankshaft/axle in relation to the coupling rods,...<br />

The comparisons with locomotive boilers, the requirements of compact design, water treatment and power output were amazing.  The middle part of the video demonstrated what the objectives of the Yarrow boiler on 10000 were.<br />
