I've been given a modern signal head by a friend who would like me to make it work as a display piece: it's a Unipart-Dorman "iLS" single lens three-aspect head, designed to run from 110VAC according to the plate on the back. It has an attached cable with a large 13-pin plug on it.

Does anyone know anything about these? Looking at their website, the low current draw (70mA) suggests that it might be one that proves it is functioning to the signal box by relay closures.

So far I have...

In Rural areas there was no mains power until after WW2 and Adrian Vaughan describes mains power being laid on to his box in the mid 1960's

So how was electricity provided, especially as more electrical/electronic systems were added and power operated signals and points, in particular Intermediate Block Sections prior to the provision of mains power

There is, on another (non railway) forum, a sometimes heated discussion about the operation of slip coaches in the 1890s. Some claim that it was normal to slip coaches on the main line and then switch them into a loop line by changing the points behind the main train. Others feel that this would have been a dangerous and prohibited procedure. Has anyone out there details of how slip coaches were operated from a signalling point of view please?

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but if anyone could suggest any books that detail and explain the different methods of controlling trains on the railway? By methods I mean not just block working but pilot, etc. Or if anyone can outline the differnet methods here than I'd be very grateful!
Many thanks,
