There are numerous combinations to the wet /greasy rail as you mention. But rolling stock requires slightly less effort to move on a very wet rail than a dry one .That could be the difference in a locomotive climbing a gradient relative easy or struggling.

OK - I'm with you now and there is no doubt that rolling stock on a curve, on a hill and where there is a check rail can create quite a resistance in the dry. But in the final analysis it surely has to be the way that the power is applied to the rail and the management of that through the adhesion between driving wheels and track.

Yes agreed, I had 10 years on a powerful 16 inch 4wheeler and I think I got to know all about adhesion ,and braking .

Not sure we should be loading loco's and trains to the point where weather conditions on the day make an appreciable difference...

Fair enough if Tangemere is all that is available, isn't there a pair of perfectly servicable Jubilee's sitting at Carnforth however ?.

One of them being ex Bristol, the other being ex Shrewsbury in BR days.. probably more appropriate than a WC..

Shame it isn't a an ex Barrow road jube. Would have been very fitting to see one of them on the north and west route.

Well, I for one will not be complaining. A Bulleid on the main line, wherever it may be, is always a delight to behold. It's only about 20 miles for me to see it somewhere in Herefordshire and I'll be looking forward to so doing.

So both trains will/should be in Chester at the same time, The Cheshireman 12.58 to 13.05 and the Cath Ex arrives 13.02.

    Confirmed on RTC website :

Change Of Locomotive On The Christmas Cheshireman 22nd November 2014

    18-Nov-2014

We have been informed today by the locomotive owners that 34067 Tangmere's repair is not yet completed and therefore it is not available to haul our train on Saturday.

We will now be double headed by Black V's 45407 and 44871.

Oh boy :). Double headed Black 5s in/out of Crewe. Shame I am not heading up to my Owls in Scotland this week or I'd call in on the way to see that.

Makes me want to get up and rock!

Much as I love Bulleids 2 x 5s are much more appropriate even if limited to 60 mph

For steam, how much of the route is more that 60mph a reality?

In fact the extra power from the 2 fives should actually be an advantage.

Has any estimate been given as to when 'Tangmere' is likely to be ready? She has quite a few engagements coming up.

Stated as "Carnforth Steamtown" to Bristol (ok, St Philips Mrsh H S T D [XPM])

Empty coaching stock hauled by an diseasel, or empty coaching stock hauled by a pair of black 5s??

That's probably the path that was provisionally booked for 34067, the black 5s are coming from bury
