Dependent on the relationship between plc and supporting organisations, and who's responsible for running the trains versus supplying refreshments… we should start a thread on that…?

    ;) ;) ;)

I don't think many railways have franchised out their on train catering yet, restaurants off the train maybe. Perhaps we should start a thread on catering on railways in house vs franchising...
I'm also more likely to buy something in the shop as well, and I'd hope that goes to the railway!

The Strathspey did well over 10 years ago by allowing a local hotel (the Cairngorm) to run the catering side. They invested a huge amount of money into the railway through upgrades to coaches and providing a permanent C&W fitter. Also the food is much better than offered by some 'leading' preserved railways, no floppy sandwiches!

The Isle of Man Railway's on-train catering is franchised out to the operator of the cafe in Douglas station - seems to be working but it would be interesting to know how much, if anything, the railway makes out of it after the refurbishment costs and wages etc are deducted. Ray.

It was a cheeky reference to the WSR, hence the winks… I should be less obtuse!

Ah sorry, I missed that :) Seeing as the GWSR can manage to franchise out some of its catering without too much of a fuss I didn't notice!

Nah, too similar to BR green for it to be a big difference. Could be chocolate and cream I suppose...

Tom - completely agree, However I would spend at least the same amount as a ticket on the railway (as well as giving a donation) so I feel like I am getting something (free travel) whilst the host railway is benefiting.

Now imagine if a GW loco had been painted Chocolate and Cream instead of GWR green..

Brown with Cream lining on a castle perhaps

This is dying for a Photoshop, but my Photoshop skills are non existent. If I had a cheap OO gauge model however, I'd definitely consider it, just to annoy the purists :D I've seen someone paint an A4 in GW green fully lined out, (as well was intercity!)...
