During the 1970s BR had two locos running with the same number for a few years...how come?

It is a standing joke that there were several numbered 47555, but it was only ever a joke.

Something to do with the transition from steam-era diesel numbers to TOPS? No idea which numbers involved though.

The numbers 7, 8 and 9 were carried by the VofR steam locos and Class 44 Peaks, 'Ingleborough', 'Penyghent' and 'Snowdon'.

true, but that's not the answer I had in mind Saggy. (that would make 6 locos not 2 now wouldn't it and I wouldn't have posted in the Diesel and Electric bit)

Well half of them were diesels ... !
So, apart from the 3 pairs you had forgotten, there were two locos with the same number then?

There were two locos numbered D2956, but not in service simultaneously.

Suspect you are thinking of Class 40 D226 and EE Shunter D226 which was renumbered D0226 to avoid confusion.

Although that renumbering took place in 1959.

I was thinking 60009 and 60 009, but thats a more recent thing, plus there's 60007,8,9,19,22 to go with it.

In the 1960's and 70s however 7029 was out and about, as was D7029, in the 70's it could have lost the D.

It wasn't a departmental was it ? (I heard adb968008 should have been tdb968008 but never carried it).

    Final thought.. it wasn't a 71/74 running around without it's E. to confuse with a 24 losing it's D ?

Didn't Reading have a departmental loco numbered 20? That would have duplicated a Peak.
