Maroon for me too, but I prefer the BR finishing, so would also prefer to see it in BR maroon, à la 46229. I believe BR maroon was one of the options in the original poll so perhaps the PRCLT is open to it?

    Great video and thread Steve!

TBH the Duchess looks awesome in any of these colours, there's a case to be made for each livery. Just when you think red is best you then see the LMS black, then notice how business-like the green looks, and how refreshing the blue might be, and so on....

Isn't it pretty well known that Brell Ewart is under starters orders with crimson lake already dripping from the brush ?

I think both him and a certain Mr Ward have their brushes ready.

Well it is the supreme being. How the tour operators must wish there were a fleet of them available in the same condition, whatever colour.

I thought there was only four: BR Green, BR Blue, LMS Black and LMS Crimson Lake? Did 46233 carry BR Maroon?

Just looked at the PRCLT website and you are correct - BR maroon was not an option (LMS red was), although I seem to recall that they have mentioned it somewhere along the line.

46233 did not carry BR maroon in steam days, but I prefer it to any other regardless.

Neither did 46203, but they still painted it maroon.

With the deflectors fitted plus all of subtle modifications for mainline running, LMS maroon sits least comfortably on 6233 in my opinion. Both the LMS black and the current green suit, but I'd vote for BR Maroon.

It's no more modified than any other NR approved machine, probably more discreetly than most with the air pump hidden than sitting below the smokebox door (34067) or on the running plate (5029), the tender header tank is only obvious when running light or tender first.

Strangely, this combination of LMS red with smoke deflectors was carried by 6233, possibly the only class member to do so.

The original LMS livery for this class was especially rich: the lining was gold leaf and black rather than yellow and black, and many fittings - lamp irons, all handrails, draw hook and shackle, etc., were chrome plated, as were the letters of the nameplates.

But given the deflectors were only applied in 1945 I doubt the maroon livery applied in 1938 would have had the immaculate finish that 6233 presents in this livery today. For me, LMS maroon and deflectors jars almost as much as a certain apple green LNER pacific does .....

Anything but the current Swindon-inspired camoflage green, please! The LMS Crimson was lovely, the LMS lined-black made a very pleasant change under good lighting, and I suspect that 1950's BR blue would look rather good.

I'd also like to see a streamlined Duchess in original Coronation Scot blue with triple silver lines, but I suspect I may have to rely on Ficticious Liveries and Hornby for that!

Would vote for Blue, every time ! When Tornado went Blue, it gave it a new lease of life ! And gave me a reason to see it, though, the, Duchess is one engine that doesn't require a new lease of life, as it looks & sounds superb in any state !

Although I have never seen her or any of her siblings in the flesh I've been giving this some serious thought and it's got to be Crimson Lake I'm afraid, based on the fact that from childhood my die-cast Hornby Duchess of Atholl is thus and any other colour does not sit right, smoke deflectors or no. Unfortunately by the same token that also means that courtesy of Tri-ang all Lizzies should be BR green!!! I've got to get oop north to see these for real and alter me brains default settings.
