Not joining Facebook is our choice. That does not stop us viewing those Facebook pages that are set up for anyone to see. Someone posting interesting information that can only be seen by Facebook members is that person's choice. If they think it's worthwhile posting at all, why restrict who can see it?

I'll get it tidied up and pdf it sometime. I think I lost the will what with all the conflicting Bulleid data - still don't have a definitive answer to this.

Anyway, this isn't exactly P2 business - I'm just off to replay those amazing Lentz simulations ;)

It is good practice to have more than one email account, whether for use on facebook or any other site, and it takes no time at all to create one.

That is a bit bizarre. Potentially cock-up rather than conspiracy? Has anyone asked them?

I can't see much benefit to restricting access.

A further update is now on the P2 site, including some fascinating gen about axle failures in the original class - you can see it here.

I must admit I didnt think of that at first, admitidley I've only browsed through my copy of SR. TBH the A1SLT could announce that Tornado's next tour would be to the moon (via a pathing stop at Acton) and I'd believe them!

Some people would still complain that it had an unpublicised Saturn V on the back though...

I am surprised they are keeping to a crank using keyways. Modern cranks are forged or semi built up using interference fits and a steam locomotive crank axle bears many similarities to a slow speed 2 stroke diesel engine crankshaft which go up to over 100,000 hp at 100rpm. Keyways went out of favour after being blamed for many a crankshaft failure. I digress but it was a horrid job climbing around webs looking at keys in an engine crankshaft and feeling bearings that had only been stopped 30mins or so earlier and was still dripping hot oil from everywhere down your collar. Still after the engine oil bath and a subsequent shower using washing up liquid your skin was really soft and clean.

Page 30 is actually dated April 1 2015, the rest are dated March 27-April 23 2015. Bit of a giveaway, that..........

I agree this is a fascinating photograph showing classic metal fatigue. But how sad that the rail industry was aware of this issue in the late thirties, and yet a few years later the lessons were not learned by the designers of the Comet airliners, with tragic consequences.

Edited to add that the cracks were attributed to stress multiplication at the sharp corner of the keyway, in the same way that fatigue cracks formed at the corners of the Comet windows.
