Sadly - for all its attraction - Class 40s don't have ETH and I suspect the stock is ETH wired. Certainly some heat is needed if the temperature at Southport remains throughout the day. Of course if we could transfer some of the hot air from the forum 47804 might not have been needed ! :);)

I suspect the passengers in the air-con coaches might appreciate the Brush as well!

(Although Brush on one end and EE on the other can be a recipe for a riot!)

Yep, and people doing the mini tour from York to Saltburn have to suffer the 47 back as far as Darlington. No way of avoiding it, not even with service trains!

Footage of 345 erupting away from Burscough Bridge yesterday morning heading for York. Also includes shots of the Cathedrals Express on the Marches.

Disgraceful. For the first time ever I am going to use the Report button to complain about the inclusion of that footage.

Showing steam locomotive action on a thread about a diesel locomotive indeed.

AND, it doesn't end there. The steam train DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A DIESEL PUSHING AT THE BACK.:eek::eek:

    ;)

Now Now there young Sir !!

This is a time for we Diesel Enthusiasts to show our generosity in accepting the use of these ancient vessels, often referred to as "kettles", and show that we have a greater tolerance of other traction types - certainly more than the avowed "kettle bashers" whose tolerance levels are even limited to specific types. I believe that some forum threads spend a multitude of posts declaring one design to be better than another without accepting that the old phrase "horses for courses" has greater relevance when discussing the "iron horses" of today's enthusiasts.

I would refer you to a famous phrase that may be relevant "Forgive them Lord for they do not know what they have done"

I hope - in the Spirit of Christmas if not in the Spirit of Forgiveness - you find these words to be of some comfort.

Here endeth the lesson; Amen :)

Thank you, they are of great comfort.

And, in all truth, I rather like the photo at the start of this thread.

Yes I like the one at the top of the page too; glad someone managed to find a bit of light on a very very dull day as my departure shots were taken at 4000ASA - ouch !

If it's my photo you are referring to, yes, the light was ok. But as the last coach rattled past me the clouds parted and the
whole scene was bathed in sunlight....grrrr:mad:

On a day when what sun was about certainly seemed to have evaded most of us, here's my own offering ... of 345 noisily climbing Miles Platting Bank ... and against a Manchester skyline that was very different in the days when the 40s reigned supreme.
In an e-mail received from the driver of the "box on the back" he stated, "The driver on the Class 40 was one of the new boys at West Coast, John Hornby. He's a life member of the Class 40 group and this was a special day for him. I'll forward your pictures on to him and make his day. If you noticed, the 47 was just providing E.T.H. and not needed to assist, so a trailing load equal to at least 12/13." LENSMEN_4678.jpg LENSMEN_4689.jpg

I'm not so sure about either. :) Now an EE Type 5 - that would be a different matter entirely.
