Havn't you heard, Because of potential problems with the national grid in 2017, SWT are making provision, for back up motive power they intend to hire in all available steam locomotives beginning with 34 and 35

Don't we know it............ most likely when folks have nothing better to do, and you wonder where the myth of the Holy Grail comes from?......... and no it ain't Monty Python!

I for one feel sorry for those who think it actually exists....... it did once, it was called Woodham's Yard, Barry South Wales, and if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have the strategic reserve we have now! Let Lone thenumber of preserved lines we do, or mainline steam - no Woodham's = no movement as we know it!;)

As I said in my previous post, the 77021 people are talking to various other people and, as it happens, I'm a small financial supporter of 82045 also, see the separate thread on this one (started by yours truly) which, I'll admit, appears rather prettier than its tender-fitted sister. However, a Class 3 Standard, tender or tank, will be a good way to keep steam alive.
Regarding authenticity, the 82xxxs were much more widely distributed over the BR network whereas the smaller number of 77xxxs were only allocated to the NE and Scottish Regions, except for 77014, which saw out its days on the Southern at Guildford Shed for some reason. This was 77001 shown below newly built from Swindon. Ugly? Useful? We'll see but I have enough confidence in both the 82xxx and the 77xxx to give them some spare change. In the case of the former, rather a lot of "spare change" is being given so there must be something in it. BTW FS123, the 77xxxs never ran on what is now the GWSR unless someone somewhere knows different!

that was the geest of my post, we do have a strategic steam reserve, its called the preservation movement why else do we still have mainline steam ;)
So when you start seeing large coal heaps being dumped at Eastleigh, Stewarts lane and Weymouth thats the time to take up your mainline conection

Having a little think about it I think any of the shadow frieght companies (Loadhaul, Mainline or Trainsrail) would suit a Spamcan, I think theres a pic of Tangmere in lined black somewhere too I'll try and dig it out.

Edit here we go as promised 1 Black can of Spam! http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/album/93-alternative-railways/

Am I really the only person who thinks the Standard 3 tender locos were prettier than the tank-engine version? Personally I find the latter a bit too square and boxy, whereas the tender version could almost be called elegant!

As for fictitious liveries, SWT or BR black are all very well, but what about a Bullied in LSWR, LBSCR or SECR livery? Or even in LNER green or garter blue? If Bullied had stayed at Doncaster, who knows? :p

I think you may indeed be the only person - The lower running plate level of the tank version would improve the tender version if it could be applied, but then it wouldn't be possible to reach everything on top of the boiler without a ladder. The big plus point about the tender version is the water capacity - how many times have we seen comments about running the longer lines mention tank engine water capacity being marginal?
And if LNER green as applied to several black 5s had been chosen over the blue then no doubt at least most of the bulleids would have worn it - as would the kings and castles and coronations and scots and jubilees and nelsons and so on....:)

You can paint a Bullied whatever colour you like. Not sure what one is though. :)

If you have a look at the link I previously it does lead you to some 'intresting' liverys. I like the artwork for the A1's in LNER constituents liverys. As for the 77's I think they look purposful, then again I quite like the BR/LMS post war locos they look like what they are ,capable tools that get the job done.

I like the 77xxx's, even though I never saw one. I think they are better looking than the tank as well. The 4MT tank is so good looking it kind of overshadows the 3MT which always looked like what it was - an unfortunate crossover between Ivatt/Riddles and Swindonian lines. But of course such views are entirely subjective.
