And came up with, what in my view is, one of the ugliest locos to come out of a British works.

Sorry Simon I can't agree. 1501 may be a bit brutish but has clasic lines and proper looks. The ugliest loco must be Bulleids Q1, you can even see the wheels from the cab.

Can't say they particularly do it for me, certainly wouldn't say they are the ungliest though.

Well as I say personal taste, looks ugly to me.

    I quite like the Q1.

Perhaps these posts could be moved to a new thread on most ugly design.

The Kitson-Still is surely a contender.

Irelands Bulleid Turf Burner does it for me... until the class 70 came to town.

    To me a Q1 is a beauty compared to a Crosti 9F....!

I wonder how long til Spamcan mentions something by E*****d Th*******n?

For me, there are plenty of ugly locos that came from that other railway in the West Country that we don't mention, for example, this is their version of the ubiquitous 4-6-0 goods engine:

There's a definite family resemblance to most other GW locos, too!

As soon as I saw the alert "Jamessquared has replied to this thread" I just knew it would be something from that great railway in the West!

I was going to say Ivatt 4MT but then I just Googled it and saw a vid of 43106 at the NNR and it just looks so right, I can't

It looks like William Heath-Robinson was planning to complete his design with a windmill and a washing line up there when someone told him that it would be out of gauge. He got the rest about right though :)
