Rather moderate decoration, I thought it's how locomotives should be turned out down here ;)

And here is the video of the 5's struggling to get traction away from Penshurst. And a good shot of the reason why.

A faultless day from Ian Riley's 5s. We managed to pick our way through the crowded network around Kent and did so in style at times. There was a lovely run back up from Ashford to Paddock Wood where Bob Baines and Ian Riley kept us in and around the 60 mark plus a pretty lively start out of Redhill up the 1 in 260 to Merstham where we shot into the tunnel at 49 - not bad for 450 tons on the drawbar.

But the performance of the day was the climb up through Guston Tunnel from a standing start at Buckland Junction. We are talking here of 1 in 60 that eases! to around 1 in 70. OK - it's only two and a half miles but you hit the bottom on a curve and we progressively built up speed and were still accelerating slowly as we plunged into the tunnel at 23 mph. All very sure footed and impressive.

And on the return, I camped myself at the other end of Penshurst Station. (never has a station been blessed with two such convenient foot crossings with such good views), where the departure was potentially much more challenging than the morning. However the fives made a pretty good start this time with just one or two well controlled slips

What was the black residue? It didn't look like leaf mulch (and the season's over anyway). Terrible rail head condition - surely drivers of electrics must have had problems and reported them?

The second to last carriage in that rake appears to be the Metro Camel Pullman recently acquired from the MHR, I wonder if its being used just for this trip before overhaul?

Departures from Penshurst by the units were pedestrian to say the least, and braking into the station was equally cautious but none had any real trouble.

Still some leaves falling on the line tho, several brown ones stuck to the line.

...... And between the two crossings stands the 'Little Brown Jug' pub. What's not to like??

    Nice vids by the way.

Merry Xmas and happy gricing in 2015.

There seems to be a constant thread that appears to accompany your gricing activities, but for the life of me I can't work it out....

Anyone on board yesterday notice what prompted the stop at Buckland Junction as it was a bit sharp and one of the locos seemed to be under power at the time.
