The East Lancashire Railway's popular steam weekends make a welcome return in the form of the Winter Steam Gala.

Join us for an action packed weekend of steam haulage with our home fleet and a special guest locomotive.

    STEAM LINE-UP:

    Guest Locomotive:

BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 92212 Courtesy of the MHR.

    Black 5 45407
    Black 5 44871
    K4 61994
    Crab 13065
    Standard 4MT 80080
    A Class 12322
    Peckett 1370 ‘May’

A freight train will also be out on the line between Bury and Ramsbottom with various engines taking their turns on this throughout the event and for a supplement you will be able to brave the weather and ride in either the ‘Toad’ or ‘Queen Mary’ brake vans…

In addition we will also be making sure the engines clock up some miles and get around the railway as some will combine forces to double head and even bank some trains!

Good line up, unusual for both black fives to be available for a winter event as one or other is normally in the shops for annual maintenance.
Will the 9F be on the railway for more than this one event?

I'm aware of that but the way the locos are listed would suggest 12322 is regarded as part of the home fleet and not a guest, i'm sure I read somewhere it was a guest until march, just wondered if things had changed?

12322 & 61994 are still regarded as visiting locos.

No I do not currently volunteer
Just need some snow and I might just re-create the improbable double-header at Burrs I took several years ago of 53233 piloting 92203. Better than 34092 pushing MSC 31 through Ingrow, ha!
Look forward to the event as always.

    ELR Winter Steam Gala

The arrangements for the ELR January Steam Event have now finalised and we hope you can join on our series of winter photo events this year.

Baron Street Works – Friday 16 January

The Friday evening night shoot will feature visiting locomotive 92212, 80080, 45407 and 44871.

The opportunity will be taken to have locomotives facing each as the two Black Fives are expected to face south, these well be positioned just inside the shed with smokebox just outside the shed.

The other locomotives will be positioned over the pit roads in order to re-create scenes from Lostock Hall shed in its later days.
Once again, meet at 18.30 for a 19.00 start, concluding at 21.00.

    Cost - £30

Please pre book at 3p20.parcels.gp@gmail.com as turn up on the night tickets will be governed by availability as numbers will be limited to 33.

Full day Photo Charter - 9F 92212 and freight set

Meet at Bury Bolton Street at 07:30 for an 08:00 departure to Burrs in order to catch the rising morning sun. We will then focus our efforts on run pasts here roughly two hours before moving north to Irwell Vale to capture the train in the beautiful surrounding countryside.

We will then break for lunch in Ramsbottom from 13:00 until 14:00 before we head back to Burrs to catch the train in the sunset. We will lose the light at around 16:00 so to conclude the day there will be a short evening shoot at Bury Bolton Street finishing at 18:30.

The train will be made up of the ELR’s mixed freight with a separate engineering train at the rear as BR practice when two trains were being moved to the same location, to give the 9F a decent load to haul.

Cost is £60.00 per person and for further details, please contact event organiser, Richard Newton at 3p20.parcels.gp@gmail.com

Regretfully, and after advice from the MHR, 92212 is not fit to attend the ELR in January.
92212 has therefore been withdrawn from the line-up which will still feature 8 locos.

    Further details in due course.

As with every bit of bad news there is a sweetener.

Due to being unable to source a replacement steam engine for the gala we have taken the decision to lower the ticket prices to our standard 'home fleet' gala prices.*

Also for this years Winter Steam Gala and NEW FOR 2015 will be the operation of some trains to the Hopwood Ground Frame (the limit of ELR operation) beyond Heywood station. This is an exciting chance for some people to see a part of the line that is not normally accessible by timetabled trains.

*Anyone who has purchased a ticket online will receive a partial refund in-line with the new ticket prices.

Thanks Rich. Was going to ask about that as I bought and paid for our tickets last week, though no yet received. A nice gesture. Just waiting for the loco allox now so we can decide which train to get from Soton Airport Parkway

By courtesy of the Furness Railway Trust, GWR 0-6-2T loco 5643 is to arrive for this gala.
Fare levels will be at the reduced 'home fleet only' rate as indicated earlier this week and advertised on the web-site.
    Timetables to follow asap.

What a good mix of motive power, just a Southern engine needed and we would have everything! I do hope some of the loco's face south/east for a change, as indicated elsewhere, there are plenty of good shots in that direction. One day photting, one day traveling, weather will dictate, a while since we had a 56xx at Bury.

Both 44871 and 45407 are facing south/east. All others face north/west at present. 5643 faced south/east last time it was here but we'll see what happens when it arrives next week.
Personally I'm rather more bothered about the numbers travelling........................

Saw 5643 going north on the M6 through Brum earlier in the week presumably heading for home!

    All the best,
