    Welsh Highland Railway Single Fairlie 'Moel Tryfan' would seem to deserve a mention here, scrapped in the very early days of preservation at the FR to raise funds, it being considered beyond restoration at that time.

    IIRC 4612 was originally bought for spares for the KWVR's pannier, as was 7027 for 7029 at Tyseley. As Jim says one of the 64xx's, actually 6430, was the DVR's source of spares for 6412 & 6435. In answer to Bramblewick's question I suppose an engine officially ceases to exist when the frames are cut up so the Austerity (RSH 7135/44) Gwyneth is no more despite its boiler and cylinders being incorporated into 'Iron Duke'. I wasn't aware that the 1979 Rocket replica had been cut up - wasn't it recently rebuilt? Thanks for all the replies chaps. Ray.

    According to Michael Bailey's book "Locomotion", the 1979 replica was rebuilt ca. 2009 with an entirely new boiler and firebox (which is believed to be more faithful to the original, in the light of subsequent research) but the rest of the replica was presumably incorporated in the rebuild. So I'd say no, the 1979 loco still exists at least as much as many other preserved locos that have been reboilered.

    According to Wikipedia, K1 62005 was originally purchased as a spare boiler for 3442.

    According to their website the builders (Flour Mill) of the 2009 Rocket consider it "a new replica of Stephenson’s 0-2-2 Rocket ......... incorporating the driving wheels, cylinders, chimney and some fittings from the previous replica".

    That's true; and that would have been the end of 62005 except that the boiler wouldn't fit!

    It's a rebuilt Rocket with new boiler, the rest of it is the 1979 machine.

    As for cut up preserved engines, a number of the Titanic Steamship/Mark Bamford collection got the chop, including the 1962 Hudswell Clarke 0-4-0STs.

    Others included the Hawthorn Leslie "Ettrick" from Blisworth Ironstone, meant to be preserved in Burton on Trent and then scrapped, also the RSH 0-4-0 "Faraday" at one time preserved at Carnforth. A number of firelesses. There was an article in an Industrial Loco Society journal in the last 10-12 years about scrapped preserved industrials - including the Kerr Stuart "Victory" class, lost when a building was demolished on top of it in a South Wales colliery.

    I've never heard of the plan to save a Victory. Shame it didn't happen. Std gauge Kerr Stuarts are a bit thin on the ground.

    I'm pretty sure that 6430 was not bought as a source of spares but became one later. I had the luck to call into the DVR almost the day it opened, not expecting to see anything in steam and was greeted by a 64xx with four autotrailers.... 6435 i think but my photos disappeared long ago

    My point was the bulders consider it to be a new-build. As Anthony has pointed out the owners (NRM) consider it to be a rebuild.

    That sounds right. There were plenty of spares to be had when the DVR set up! A damaged cylinder block nowadays is not as daunting as it was a decade or two ago no doubt.

    Schools 30900 'Eton' was originally earmarked for preservation and spent a long time at Ashford Works before finally being cut up after it was decided to save 30925 instead.

    Does anybody know what the rationale was behind that decision? I thought "National Collection" policy at the time was to preserve the oldest surviving member of the class, except where another member of the class had a special claim to fame (e.g. Mallard). So why Cheltenham?

    A second WD 2-8-0 was purchased in Sweden for the Nene Valley Railway, but was cut up in error.

    Was there any attempt to save another of the Britannia pacifics? Always surprised only 2 were saved. Thought they were popular engines

    Im sure 70004 was offered for preservation to Stratford council but they didnt have any space to display it. So off it went to the scrap yard.
