Whilst I cannot confirm that to be true, I can confirm there are no weeds where we have put ash.

No I do not currently volunteer
Then why not drop it in the 4 foot and 6 foot ?

As for ashpan cinders, dig a hole and bury them. :D

I know a local farmer tends to have a good load of ash from bridgnorth from time to time. I think he uses it for filling potholes and general farm tracks.

Its also good for model railway loco yards. Crushed down to almost a powder it gives a good impression.

Does anyone use ash ballast nowadays? And when they did, was it loco ash?

Some of the product from Grosmont and Newbridge is used as ballast on the NYMR but only in siding areas.

Just think of all the money that could be saved if it was used on the running line, Bryan. ;) You know it makes sense! (Along with bullhead rail and timber sleepers.....)

We (Swanage) have done in sidings, although our loco ash is mainly used these days for creating walkways in the cess.

Just found out at Bowes because we are a scheduled industrial monument we have to use black ash ballast, so we must use it.
