The frames on the moguls were arguably marginally too thin. This ultimately was because of their shared ancestry with the K class tank engines, where lightness had been at premium to keep the axle loading down. When the moguls were designed, they used the same thickness frame plates even though weight was no longer an issue. This meant that many components (such as frame stretchers) could be shared rather than having to be redesigned, but meant that towards the end of their lives, the frames started to prove the weak point of the locos.

Great examples of pictures being worth thousands of words. The text description of the work being done meant almost nothing to me until I looked at the pictures, then suddenly it all made sense. It's great to see 4472 coming back together, and the photographic record could prove to be a wonderful resource for future generations. Keep up the good work, Mr R.

The thread title is for updates, let's keep it that way. Those of us who are interested in information end up having to wade through pages of froth, which sometimes just isn't helpful...

As and when any further facts about the move of Ian Riley's business become available it would seem reasonable for them to be mentioned on this thread. Anything on that subject other than hard facts needs to be avoided.

Maybe visiting the Works would be the way to discuss and get updates, photos and reports are posted fairly regularly.

I have a photo somewhere of a very excited and nervous red-headed child stood in front of 60103 for the first time at Churston Station - I remember that day and look forward to seeing the loco again!

Wow - that's great news! It seems the NRM have thought with their heads and are doing the right thing she will be in the correct livery for her current chimney etc.

"The loco has been changed so often over the past 90 years that it is now practically impossible to present it in a wholly historically accurate appearance. As well as the currently most well-known guises of the apple green 4472 and the BR green 60103, Flying Scotsman has also been numbered 1472, 103, and 502.
The loco will retain the double chimney and smoke deflectors it carried when the Museum acquired it in 2004. This being the case we have decided to present it in its final BR working appearance as far as is reasonably practicable."

Sorry LNER apple green fans but its just not right!

It's amazing the amount of goodwill that a coat of wilcock's improved engine green can create!

Whilst I am not a big fan of BR green, perhaps its not a bad decision- A change of colourscheme, hopefully reflecting a change in fortune for the machine.

I agree with "Hurricane". I recall FS visiting the GWSR around September 1993 and it was in the BR Green livery then and looked the part. (It was indeed 1993 and I've just found a photo) It is also, of course, as accurate a scheme as possible for the locomotive in its current configuration. I'm not a real A3 fan, being more a GWR aficionado, but I'll be delighted to see Flying Scotsman running again. Most of my railway enthusiast colleagues in my adopted home town also remember FS in its later BR days so it would be great to see it on the ECML again in this form. Well done to the folks at Rileys who are doing the work!

I am not actually sure as a museum of such high standing, if the NRM could paint it in anything other than its BR appearance. Unless of course they change the chimney and remove the smoke deflectors and any other later additions, maybe this could happen in 7 years time when the mainline ticket expires!

This is a good move by the NRM a new image that reflects the condition she is in and its historically correct, you could say also that it reflects a new dawn for her, previously she has run in a totallly incorrect livery and didnt recieve the care she should have,, maybe, now those days can be finally put to rest.
