Being able to do that only comes from years of self denial I'm afraid.

Thank you Don , I was very lucky at Birkett as with 46233 being ten early the sun was still giving decent light .

I really have no idea how I keep them so stable, not so long ago any handheld shots I took were all over the place too...

Two hand grip, wrists resting on the top of the drop light or window frame. Trying to hold the camera steady without this support is a waste of time.

Something of a 'holy grail day' yesterday - a Duchess in the fells, in winter, snow on the ground, no box in sight, 12 on - it doesn't get much better. As commented on already, the performance on the S&C was simply superb and perhaps the most memorable since 46115's epic in 2009.

Video from the Lune Gorge and Shap Summit, now up:

They would be OK for looking out of the window Bill, but not really for along the side of the train..

How long did it take to hike up that mountain to get that fabulous Lune Gorge shot?????

At least one good thing has come out of the steam ban last Summer. Some gentle persuasion that running 46233 through the Winter months, would be very welcome by quite a few I would imagine.

Superb! The Duchess at full power doing 70+, on the run up to the start of Shap, absolutely awesome!! Despite the presence of the M6, the Lune Gorge is still a spectacular landscape; well caught there David. Can't wait for your footage of the S & C section. Many thanks for sharing.

    Cheers, Alan

Many thanks Ralph - about an hour, for less than a quarter of a mile. I lost my footing a few times, probably much to the amusement of drivers on the M6!

Thank you very much Alan - much appreciated. I agree - it must have been very special without the M6, which despite its intrusion, is a notable piece of civil engineering,

Yes, I agree. I should have used the word spectacle rather than performance.

OK - I know that the Duchess stormed up to Appleby and then did it all again to Ais Gill. I also know that the view from the window was quite something, not that we saw it for very long as we flew by. BUT, that pan of the Lune Gorge on the northbound run will go down (IMHO) as one of the best clips of steam on the S&C. (Edit: on the Shap/S&C route ). If anyone is in any doubt that steam in the snow in the right setting isn't just one of the best visual treats you can have, then show them this. Oh, and it's a Duchess as well. Spoken like a true Southern man!
