The M3 extension from Basingstoke to Winchester didn't happen until 1985. So I can't see this being one of the reasons why the line was closed.

I dunno. The MOT would have known they wanted to build the M3 by the time the closure was announced. It wont have been the deciding factor though.

didnt the line close in about 73 about the same time as the Swanage branch? i think that BR had to cut costs to fund inproovements to other routes so lightly used branches, or duplicated liness were earmarked for closure, At the time the MHR was not seen as being of use as it was a non electrified route.

There were a number of closures in the early 1970s including the ones you describe plus I believe Bridport, the WSR. I'm sure there were others.

The Mid Hants uploaded its new website layout today which looks good. I like the way the way the photo takes centre stage but the the only small gripe for me is the events bit below with all the buttons not being in line it drives my werid computer OCD mad.

Looks like a very pleasant replacement. What cannot be seen from the artists impression is, will the bridge width be like for like? Ie. will it retain its double track capability be or reduced to single? I have always wondered if there would be an ability to return the section from Alton to Butts back to double track. Would give the line something a little different to have two trains passing and also free up platform 3 at Alton as the departing train wouldn't have to wait for the up train to arrive in the loop. Probably just a pipe dream!

I have checked the plans on the Alton Planning Portal, its planned to be a double track bridge (the cost difference between a single and double would be marginal)

Looking at that artists impression, it seems that the bridge piers are double track width but with a single track span?

That's why I asked the question but looking at the span, it would appear to be on the former down line (latterly Meon Valley line) when the MHR runs on the former Up line so there is some disparity there. Anyway, now that my question has been answered I'm happy.

http://planningpublicaccess.easthan...60225063_PROPOSED_SITE_LAYOUT_PLAN-499524.pdf - see the attached link to the PDF of the plan submitted to planning, which clearly shows a double track bridge (before anyone one gets excited and starts the MHR is going to be doubled, I am sure this is just future proofing in case a longer siding was needed etc).

For those of you with a passion for the UK's planning system - this is where all the documents relating to this planning application are available for public viewing. http://planningpublicaccess.easthan...ctiveTab=documents&keyVal=_EHANT_DCAPR_232490

Btw - the major thing that no one has mentioned yet is that the scheme will see the demolition of the remnants of the old Butts Junction Signal box.

The MHR was earmarked for closure back in 1967. It took six years before BR got its way. Local people in the area kept up the fight to save the line until 1973. I wonder if the line had of stayed open would the Meon line now be preserved?

Hmm, the Meon Valley line... that'd make a nice branch off the Mid-Hants...

I see that the frames and side tanks of 41312 have migrated to Ropley yard...a good sign! 76017's tender is still in the headshunt though

I think the plan is to get 41312 ready for next Spring's timetable i.e February/March trains when loadings are often light...maybe even a return to weekend operating in January?? First out by the end of 2015 should be 76017. I think this is correct, but anyone more cloely involved with the loco side please feel free to correct me
