6233 had the much publicized choose the colour vote which also raised money for the overhaul . How much escapes me so apologies. In fairness there has only been one photo charter with the loco at it home at Butterley plus an accidental evening shoot appearance . Its appearances have otherwise been main line together with the occasional open day .

I would probably argue that the 60163 team used repaints as a way of maintaining interest in the loco from the broader population and although I don't have a photograph of it in Blue , of all the liveries carried it the one I thought looked best and had a tremendous wow factor to it

Repaints do have there place especially revitalising a locomotive that has had its first flush and has drifted out of peoples affections . 4566 being a case in point , paid for via a photographers appeal and done in house on the SVR to a good standard including a hand painted crest on tank side after the transfer misbehaved . It is a repaint that will stand the loco in good stead when I suspect it goes on display in the engine house at the end of its ticket. It has featured on a number events at the SVR and will do so on its visit to the South Devon Railway .

However these can only ever happen with the goodwill of the loco owner and in Bob's example it is a goodwill that is tainted by a bad experience. I have also seen some (politely) rough repaints but done so in the knowledge the loco was to be taken to pieces shortly after for overhaul

Returning to 6201 one of my most memorable sights was to see her on the SVR LMS set which looked stunning, having had a past involvement in the loco I have to confess i like her in LMS Red in the same way I would prefer 4472 in apple green (single chimney) (Mod note - don't go there !)

For those who want to see it in green you could always take a look at

And after looking at the video, anyone who still wants to see it it in drab green wants their head examined IMHO.

I don't know - it's fascinating to see (4)6201 in a workaday condition. Reminds us that steam locomotives and invariably their history includes dirt, oil, steam and rust as much as any other product of the industrial revolution and thereafter.

Love the red nameplates and worksplates by the way - they just look the part on a dark green machine so.

The red is partly why I became fan. Ugh about the above. It just doesn't suit her. I agree with BOB by the way.

I've just been looking through the photos i took and found this It looks like a modified blast pipe to me but did 46201 ever have a double-chimney?

I think that 46201 might give away they livery Lizzie will reappear in.

Joking apart but I'm pretty sure Lizzie did carry a double chimney , a stovepipe one which did little to improve her good looks . There is some conjecture as to whether she ever ran carrying it .

There is an image in LM Pacifics , pub Roundhouse books in 1967

Incorrectly dimensioned double chimney/blastpipes tested in 1934. 6201 could do with a second look at the front-end btw.
    Kind regards

@JJG Koopmans . Did the outside cylinders not exhaust through one chimney and the inside the other ?

That is indeed what Powell reports, both blast caps had a diameter of 5 1/4 in., while the single
they replaced had 5 11/16 in. They still had a lot to learn and understand in those days.
    Kind regards

............Behind a plethora of LNER pacifics and V2s that looked far better because their tenders were better proportioned to match the engines!
