The only relevant existing thread that I can find, https://www.national-preservation.c...ct-secures-ee-16svt-engine.33785/#post-525602, was specific to the engine and has had no postings for two years, so I'm starting this one.

Notice of the AGM (28 March in Derby) has just been issued, together with various reports. It is clear that the engineering team has done a lot of planning for how a convincing recreation of 10000 can be built using some major parts from existing withdrawn diesel locomotives (to minimise both costs and the difficulty of achieving mainline certification) together with the abovementioned engine and the spare EM2 bogies. It is also clear that communication with members has been poor, hence fewer subscriptions paid in 2014 than in 2013, and that no-one has done much about fundraising. They are appealing for people to work on those aspects (and for a new Chairman). Personally I can offer little, but I thought we should at least have a thread here.

A recreation of 10000 would be interesting but is there enough interest as anyone who remembers it in service is probably too old to get actively involved. The locomotive was scrapped before younger diesel fans were around therefore the pool of active participants (and money) is probably not there for rapid advancement of the project. But here's hoping!

I really hope this one happens. I think new build diesels are a tricky one though, but I do think the Baby Deltic project has the potential to start the ball rolling in a similer fashion to Tornado but as I say its a tricky one. I dont see many Sulzer or Maybach fans willing to cough up for this one.

Problem is lack of interest and cash to match.

The only reason so many diesels are preserved today is because a couple of 30 something's can put their hands on £25k in the early 2000's (such like a car loan) far easier than it could be in the 1960's.

Trouble us that £25k democratic needs £100k spending on it... And those 30's something's suddenly get married.

If diesel preservation was serious, motivated and supported like the steam movement locos such as D5705 and D8233 would have been working a decade a go... As is if these cant even get past the starting line new builds won't either.

I'm resurrecting this thread because of a recent relevant posting on another thread.

The last I heard was on 14 February last year when Derek Payne, the IDRS treasurer, emailed members saying
"On Tuesday 16th Feb I will be changing my internet provider.
As a consequence my email address will be changing that day.

"Please do not send me any emails from midnight tonight Sunday 14th.
I shall contact you with my new email address once the change has been completed."

As far as I can see I never received any further information after that.

The website hasn't updated in a while: I just clicked on a link to see if I could purchase membership and all I got from the destination URL (https://sites.google.com/site/lms10kshop/) was

The gadget spec URL could not be found

Clicking around the site at lms10000.org produced a lot of either old pages or non-functioning pages. As web presences go, it's not inspiring. Do they have a Faceache/Twitter presence?

    Both...

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LMS10000/ (no logon required)

    Twitter: https://twitter.com/LMS10000

Neither have been updated for a considerable time, but there are some interesting discussions on the Facebook site about the lack of progress and communication.

Could not the NRM get involved with this? I know it's been said many times that one of the twins not being in their collection is one of the biggest regrets,I'm sure they couldn't put any monies in due to certain other Green loco's, but I'm sure they are able to provide assistance and they might be able to have some of the work done in the workshops

Trouble is, re-creating 10000 would fall way outside the remit of the NRM. And one or two of those Facebook comments make depressing reading.

Not sure what their remit is, but if the NRM can find space for a Japanese Bullet Train then Britain's pioneer main line diesel class should not raise too many eyebrows.

The bullet train was a gift. I would imagine that if they were offered LMS 10000 as a gift, they might well be tempted but I doubt that they are in the market for building it.

True. Captain Fantastic was suggesting that they might provide workshop space and other practical assistance rather than funding.

This is what I was driving at. Preserving something - yes, certainly. But building a replica? No - that I would say is outside the remit of a museum. I suppose the question that could be asked is "who built the replica of Rocket?"

If you mean literally building replicas, maybe, but several museums including the NRM have filled gaps in their collections with replicas. The NRM has Rocket, Sans Pareil and Iron Duke. Liverpool Road has Planet and Novelty. The Pockerley Tramroad at Beamish is operated entirely by replicas. No reason for a museum not to commission a replica, although the actual manufacturing might not be their forte.

Having said that, I don't think a replica of 10000 would be the best use of the NRM's scarce funds. But the suggestion was that the NRM might provide practical assistance rather than funding.

With some preserved steam locos I suspect Triggers Broom syndrome might be applicable. i.e How much of the original loco exists and how much is replacement?
Not a comment necessarily pertinent to this subject but still worthy of thought.
Personally I quite like the idea of replica Diesels (10000, class 22/21/29, class 23 [Blue Pullman would really be an exciting prospect]) if only so I could see them in the flesh and experience what it was like to travel behind one. Isn't this exactly the same reason Steam replicas are produced.
