V2 tender was based on an older group standard six wheel tender - a tender type which was contemporary to Fowler's. There's certainly in all railways some influences from others but on this occasion I think it's fair to say that the six wheel tender is a universal idea and fairly similar across Britain's railways in any event.

There is an image in Rowledge, "The LMS Pacifics" page 44, of 6201 taken in October 1934 depicting the quite unattractive cut-down stovepipe double chimney. Does nothing for the looks of the loco at all.
The author confirms the double blastpipe arrangement mentioned above ( inside cylinders/ front blastpipe nozzle etc) was possibly to explore an improvement in steaming, but was soon removed as being unsatisfactory and the loco returned to single blastpipe/single chimney form.
The steaming situation appears to have been improved with a larger 32-element superheater.

Rowledge also shows a 1935 drawing produced for proposed streamlining of the Princess Royal class, an idea not proceeded with, as was a streamlined cowl around the chimney, again a drawing for that appears in the above book.

I'm just so glad Lizzie shall return this year. I have been holding back since 2011 when I knew she was going into overhaul at Tyseley! I hope Tyseley and few others have plans to get her north of Edinburgh as well as Sapperton and The Devon Banks.

For the sake of two or three extra troughs on the route to Scotland the LMS avoided having to build dozens of bigger tenders.

And what happened when those water troughs were removed...? In preservation, I think the big ECML locos have the last laugh on water stops quite frankly.

I do look forward to seeing 6201 - got up close and personal at Railfest and gained a new found respect for the workmanship of Crewe as a result.

so we're saying that the LNER policy of carrying extra water round the country (hot and cold) was finally justified about 50 years too late for the shareholders who paid for it to derive any benefit? [grins, ducks, runs]

Jim - I was under the impression the water troughs were removed on ECML and WCML at the start of electrification? I can't imagine having more water troughs was particularly pleasant for the crews involved anyway!

Anyone want to start an appeal to put them back at Garsdale? Just think, unique in the world, a tourist attraction that no other country could match. Leeds to Carlisle non-stop quicker than the Thames-Clyde. (Just dreaming)

I took my mother on a major steam tour last year and she really liked the water stops. She has commented that it was good to be able to get out from time to time to stretch legs, to see the scenery if the stop was somewhere out of town, and to be able to go up and see the locomotive close up. They seem to have added to her enjoyment of the trip. After all if the tourists wanted a fast non stop journey to xxx they wouldn't be on a steam tour at all, they'd be up above with Cattleair or whoever.

The society put up a donation notice on the website right column April 11. A little more money needed for finishing touches?

Sounds like the 6201 society need some more pennies to complete the overhaul.

I bet they are kicking themselves now for not having it ready in time - it was one of the locos that saw recent use with DBS - notably pulling the Royal Train.

They should be raking it in now. Shame shame shame!

I don't know that raking it in would ever be an accurate phrase to use in conjunction with steam locomotive ownership...

Perhaps raking it out is more frequent...

Lizzie has an air pump down by the bogie, right hand side I think.

Was that in the UK ? our water stops are increasingly in loops where you are imprisoned in the stationary coaches for 45 mins.

Left hand side. A neat installation. Not intrusive, but accessible.

Lizzie has been scheduled to 4 more steam dreams assignments. Hopefully they will happen given what is going on right now.
