Do we have any idea if there is going to be a loco hired in for the summer as there was last year for the summer period or are they waiting to see if Taw valley is completed in time.

I seem to recall reading that as 34027 is expected back by May, there shouldn't be a need to hire one in. Of course there's always caveats with plans like that.

Some of this is a bit dated but:

Talyllyn Railway No. 3 ‘Sir Haydn’
    – she left The Engine House to visit The Caravan and Camping Show at the NEC from February 17th-22nd before returning to the Talyllyn (Talyllyn Facebook)

1450 - Collett, Ex GWR - She will attend The 6880 Society’s Steel Steam and Stars IV from March 6th to 15th at the Llangollen Railway.
At the SVR she is advertised for the Eardington Explorer on April 17th and an autotrain driving experience on May 31st.

1501 - Pannier Tank, GWR-design –North Norfolk Railway have announced that 1501 will be joining their March Gala, arriving on March 3rd and departing shortly after the event. 1501 will have visited NYMR, Swanage, Nene Valley, GCR and North Norfolk since late September.

4150- Prairie Tank, Ex GWR – The superheater header has been sent for machining in readiness for the boiler overhaul. Twitter picture Twitter picture Shareholders have voted to paint her in 1947 Hawksworth livery, Great Western green, with G W R in gold leaf on the side tanks.

4566 - Small Prairie Tank, Ex GWR – She attended the Branch Line Week February 14th - 22nd at the South Devon Railway and on the first day took on the identity of out of traffic sister 4555 to recreate the first SDR workings.

5164 - Prairie Tank, Ex GWR – Amanda Hambidge, a volunteer who does a wonderful job at Barrow Hill cleaning this out of traffic engine, reports 5164 will be staying there until at least October now due to the ongoing shortage of undercover storage space on the SVR (SVRA forum).

7812- Collett 'Erlestoke Manor', Ex GWR - After successful insurance cold & in steam exams plus some mechanical, boiler and paintwork attention, 7812 returned to service on February 22nd. (EMF Facebook).

42968- Stanier Mogul, Ex LMS - The SMF continues to dismantle and clean components and structure ready for painting for 42968's overhaul - February 5th update.

82045 – Standard Class 3, BR-design – The February news update is online.

Catch me who can - returned safely from Holland in late September last year and is currently sheeted up for the winter. However, it looks as though the sheet will have to come off soon. The engine shares the Cattle Dock siding with several carriages undergoing restoration, and a shunting session is imminent as one of the carriages is nearly finished (website).

34027 should and I stress Should be ready for May the 16th for an incoming railtour.
I highly doubt there will be a need to hire in. Once the high season hits in June we should have 7812, 43106, 34053, 34027, 2857, 4566, 1501 with 7802, 7714 and 813 all proposed for this year (going on what has been printed in the latest SVR news).

That is good news I do wonder how often 34053 and 34027 will be running on the same days I am guessing mainly high summer July August. I lived in the north the when 34027 was in use the first time round on the SVR will hopefully be able to get first trip in this year.

Spare a thought for the crews - 5 days of sweltering on one of those in the height of summer would be more than a tad uncomfortable compared to say 2857 or similar.

Swings and roundabouts though, I wouldn't want to on 2857 running tender first in the winter!

I've never been on a 28xx, but assuming a low GWR tender gives similar protection to the low Maunsell ones, I'd take 2857 in the depths of winter over a Spamcan in high summer any day!

Here comes 2857 plodding up Eardington Bank in the middle of winter with the engine crew in shirtsleeves, a week or so ago. To be fair, we have hardly had what you could call a winter, just a cool Autumn, melding into Spring, a shame really......

I prefer to think of the 3,500 gallon tender less as protection from the elements and more as motivation to get home quicker!

Call me a softie but I prefer an enclosed cab and doors and windows which can be opened closed depending on the seasons, and preferbly an EE power unit behind me somthing like this fits the bill nicely 2015-01-03 12.53.33.jpg

I can testify 2857 tender first is bloody cold. Christmas eve on the staff ecs home to Bridgnorth. I think all four of us on the footplate were cuddling the lubricator or trying to get into the corners. A very brisk northerly wind didnt help but a hot roaring fire in the cottage was welcome.
It wouldnt be so bad if 28 had a proper cab. Not a glorified lean too.

Didn't the guy who ran Colour Rail get quite a few complaints from GW fans a few years ago for one of his captions? I think it was along the lines of 'The
fireman of 28xx stands in the space where other railways provided cab doors'
