I suspect there may be loading gauge issues for Lyn on the FfR.

Craftmaster Paints - who supplied the paint for Lyd - charge £28 per litre of paint (I know as I bought some a week or two back). Someone's making a mint charging the 762 bunch £55 for the same amount then...

They do both Eastleigh Olive and L&B Green incidentally.

Maybe there's a little bit of rounding up on sponsorship items - you couldn't blame them for maximising income where they can!

Oh of course, I forgot that the loading gauge on the L&B is more generous than the FR, hence why Lyd has an adjustable cab. Be interesting if Lyn had an adjustable height too, but I don't think that's possible since it's cab is wooden.

My memory says WHR for testing because of that loading gauge issue...

This is going back a few years so it may well have changed, but the plan was to take her to Woody Bay first so that 762 members could see her where she should be and then take her up to the WHR for runing in trials, just how long she is up there depends on a number of factors you can expect from a new engine, I would not put it past any one not to at least get one photo charter out of it double heading with LYD on the WHR, it would also help the funds to keep both locos working.

I would love to see Russell and Lyn on a double header on the WHR as well. Who knows we might even see an L&BR weekend on the WHR? or just as a one off how about our own version of the Devon Belle with both Pullmans and L&BR coach 14(15) on the WHR being double headed?

    The possiblites are endless

Perhaps Lyn can visit the Vale of Rheidol Railway and show them what it can really do! I'd be curious actually to see how it compare to their resident engines, that goes for Lyd especially, being of similar design.

I think it will all depend on the back to back of LYN's wheel sets and the flangeways on the V of R, which is a problem why there has not been many visiting locos from any where else to go to the V of R.

I had thought it was the other way around, the VoR has a wheel profile with shorter back-to-back flange distance that caught on the check rails / flangeways of other lines.

I used to work with Ken Howitt who had been a wheel profile specialist at Derby RTC in BR days. He mentioned in passing he had designed a new wheel profile for the VoR. I now wish I had probed him more on the subject.

I thought the VOR back to back issue had been debunked a while back, when the TR turned some wheels for them, using exactly the same profile as the FR.

I think it has more to do with the check rails more than anything else the L&BR is 60cm where as the the Vof R is 1ft 11 1/2 inches, may be not enough in it to worry most people, but enough that you don't want to break some one elses toy, I recall some years ago that Leighton Buzzard had its far share of gauge issues it was surprising just how much variation there was on visiting locos back in the 1990's.

I've just asked the Project Manager about this:

"The paint we will use is recommended by Alan Keef to provide a good finish and durable life. It is a 2 pack epoxy paint that is sprayed on.

Barber and Russell have recently been painted this way."

    I hope that explains!

Thanks - I'm definitely going to sponsor some paint - you can then see one of your sponsored items every time you see even a photo of the loco!!

The latest Lynformation (http://762club.com/762lynformation29.php) describes a couple of setbacks with suppliers and fabricators. In the great scheme of things these are not major problems, but if we all want to see Lyn finished on time (end of this year), it will help if supporters dig into their pockets again to help cover some of the extra funds that will be needed to overcome these glitches!
Remember, you can sponsor parts for prices under fifty quid, right up to buying a membership (or another membership) for 762 pounds.
One last push is needed now so that we can all see Lyn steaming on the L&B in 2016 :D

Having read the article I am surprised we have not had more problems, it may take a while longer to build, but as the old saying goes Rome was not built in a day.

Launch pushed back at least 6 months following an almighty cock up with the frames, plus smaller issues with eccentrics and cylinder liners.

Is this the start of the troubles you might expect for an experimental machine (which is undoubtedly what this version of Lyn is) with manufacture farmed out to a vast number of different businesses - or is it only a minor hiccup?

I suspect within a year or so when a new Lyn is steaming at Woody Bay no one will care or even remember...

Have I missed something? I haven't seen anything about problems with cylinder liners.

It was mentioned in one of the Lynformation bulletins, apparently one of the valve liners grabbed before it was fully home. Due to the shrink fit with liquid nitrogen, once it has grabbed there is no way to remove it intact to try again so a new liner is needed.
