New build of extinct locos is the way to go. Don't cannibalise any more even if there are several others preserved.

The pre-grouping era of the GWR (ie nearly 100 years of history) is poorly represented at Didcot and hardly at all anywhere else....lets see some Dean and Armstrong replicas and some absorbed lines locos too

PW on BBC Breakfast News this morning about the same thing. He said he's hoping to raise about a million to pay for overhaul of 5553 including training 4 apprentices.
Few shots of LNWR Heritage workshop and the usual Kylie "Locomotion" cliche!

    Thread bump.
Just seen a picture on Facebook of 7027 loaded on a low loader at Crewe with the chimney removed to go under motorway bridges.
Wonder what's happening to it? Hopefully restoration.

Has anything happened with Pete's engines since being at Peak rail yet? When the auction was done for the model trains the money was supposed to go towards the engines wasn't it?

Good news for Crewe as it tidies up the space taken up by the stock.

There now remains on the Heritage Centre rails only the Peak locomotive which should be departing soon for Peak Rail. Then that leaves the two Castle tender tanks, one tender chassis, various wheels sets, a couple of boilers and other loco parts and then that should be all the Waterman clutter finally gone. There is now a good opportunity for the Centre to reorganize and tidy up and continue to return to its original purpose of being a Heritage Centre for the town of Crewe. The exhibition hall is now in the process of being prepared for use again for its intended purpose. As next year sees the Centre's 30th Anniversary it is the ideal time now to look at the prospect of a major re-launch in 2017.

Had a close look at Thornbury, there's a big chunk of the smokebox saddle casting missing on the right hand side, which I guess is part of the cylinder casting. Signs of some work having been done, the dragbox looks OK for example.

Given that we have hundreds of GW 4-6-0s in preservation, including about a dozen of the 4-cylinder (de Bousquet knock-off) version, and all the missing ones being recreated - why not scrap the sad remains of this not particularly distinguished example and use the cash to fund something awesome like a Highland Skye Bogie?!?!?
(Just winding you all up: My late grandfather who was highly partial to the copper-capped Swindon products would have given me a hiding for that sentiment....)

7027 is still up for sale I believe. It has a boiler in very good condition which was overhauled at Swindon not long before the loco was withdrawn.
