    Spring Steam Gala 17 – 19 & 24 – 26 April

    Introduction

We regret to announce that due to factors beyond our control No 4936 ‘Kinlet Hall’ and Pannier Tank No 5786 are now unable to appear at the Gala. As you may be aware West Coast Railways, the principle operator of steam traction on the main line network, are currently unable to operate, while Network Rail have also just identified a loading gauge problem on the Esk Valley line for ‘Hall’ class of locomotives. In the case of the ‘Pannier’ the locomotive’s host railway is not now able to release it. Meanwhile over the past weekend an unexpected problem has been discovered on B1 No 61264 while major repairs to Q6 No 63395 are taking longer than expected. As a consequence, with the line-up of locomotives significantly less than advertised, normal rather than Gala fares will now apply over both weekends (*).

While the non-appearance of the above locomotives is obviously disappointing we still expect to steam 8 others over the 6 gala days, which will include Esk Valley running to Battersby, demonstration goods trains, a model railway exhibition, and the ‘Last Train to York’ photographic exhibition.

(* anyone who has paid the Gala fare price when buying in advance will receive a voucher to spend on the railway by calling in at Pickering Customer Services office.)

    The anticipated line up is:

    61994 The Great Marquess
    60007 Sir Nigel Gresley
    45407 The Lancashire Fusilier
    45428 Eric Treacy
    75029 The Green Knight
    44871
    62005
    76079

Thank you for the update 47406.

I think the NYMR should be applauded for the changes to the fares. I've been to plenty of galas that have had the same issues with a lack of visiting locos but still charge gala prices.

One question does that mean members now get the 50% discount as per a normal operating day?

    Thanks

    Andrew

Being a GWR fan I do think it maybe more interesting comparing a Modified Hall like 6960 Ravingham Hall . With the extra steam super heating and with a recently completed overhaul it is performing especially well on the WSR. I don't believe it is main line registard so not so much favoured by the NYMR, never the less a fine loco.

Having now read the above post just goes to show that you shouldn't believe all you hear.

The K1 worth a visit alone anyway! Not worked much on preserved lines in recent years being either at Carnforth or on the mainline.

Sounds as though K4 61994 "The Great Marquess" is now being added to the line-up.

There is no 'normal' fare to Battersby. Will Whitby rover suffice?

There is always a small additional charge to travel to Battersby.

When I visited last year all I saw was a black 5 and a B1 now at a gala a really good selection of locos not seen in the west country.

Will be interesting to see what is doing the Battersby run....

Especially if engines like 62005 and 61994 are billed as guests.

One source suggests they will be T&T with box with the box alone on some Whitbys. For a steam gala that seems a bit odd. We shall see.

David (Who left early from railway last week due to the box-ness of things. But Saltburn Cliff Lift was a superb alternative in the sun!)

Suppose it defeats the object of a steam gala but at the same time, doesn't mean 2 locos will be tied up for 4 and a half hours. I'm not too fussed about 'boxes' though :)
