...and what more proof could you need of their importance than WCRC's suspension and what effect that has already had and could have yet?

Beancounter and Big Al have gone to the dark heart of this matter, professionalism. One actor in the ghastly pantomime has managed to get a personal mention in both the Stafford RAIB report (Item 7) AND the ADR20 Adjudication (4.1.7 et alibi) which is a bit special in the Railway Egg On Face Department.

What's the First Rule? If you bubble a potential competitor steam TOC to the Grown Ups, for a fairly bad SPAD with underlying systemic failure, don't then go and have an eye-wateringly worse one yourself. It makes the Grown Ups very nervous and they will send you upstairs to bed with no supper.

Suggestions that NR maybe anti steam have been made: I don't know whether that it true or not.
However, many people who work for the national TOC's do have a poor view of steam rail tours. This arises from the hassle they get from passengers traveling on the national network which experience serious delays to their journey by one of these tours which have had a failure of some description. Speaking to a friend today about this very matter, he commented that many travelers have had serious issues getting back to their places of work or catching connections/flights elsewhere and generally, as with all things of this nature, the guy/gal who gets the grief is the one that happens to be nearest at the time.

And National TOC trains NEVER break down causing delays???
Power lines work 100% of the time?
Sadly the police close tracks as "crime scenes" from time to time.

Passengers do not complain of the hassle National TOC trains cause by their failures and other incidents??? Just Steam tours... Yeah"!

A weak argument very badly put!

Too right. Answer back to the grown ups enough times and they will expect you to explain yourself.

What a lot of babble. The 67 that failed on the front of GB8 on Friday definetly wasn't a steam loco....

I do admit that steam charters need to be more reliable and more mindful of the modern network; not trying to run rediculious itineraries would be a start.

But I have also been on a service train when the guard (train manager) announced over the PA that the delay was caused by a late running steam charter...despite no charters being anywhere close. It was a Tuesday and the last charter along the line had been on Sunday. He wasn't very amused when I asked him for more details.

As I sit on a preserved railway trundling along at 15mph at best, I ask for a return to sensible mainline steam ASAP. Wake me up when we get back to Kiddy! Very tasty anniversary beer though.

Anyone one who reads the news or watches tv cannot be unaware of rail delays. My post was purely reporting the viewpoint a TOC member of staff made to me. Not sure about badly put, more like badly read!
So, there was no need for the bile.

No bile at all. Just perspective. Your post implied that steam tours were the sole cause of most delays. I use the rail network extensively for long and short journeys. I have been delayed on a broken down train, as a result of another broken down service, a slow running local service, loss of power, vandalism, bad weather, crime scene closures to list just a few. I have NEVER been delayed by the impact of a charter train.

I cannot find any reference in the RAIB Stafford SPAD report to the individual referred to, not by name, in the ADR20 adjudication. Can you give a more exact reference in SPAD report to the mention.

Completely agree. While accepting that any steam breakdown that delays service trains is one too many, the number of times it happens must be absolutely infinitesimal compared with all the multiple reasons you list.

So, have we established that steam doesn't break down regularly enough for a desire to get rid of this problem having any chance of being the motivation behind recent events? Hope so!

Why is steam being singled out here?.........

What about all those boxes antiquated or otherwise that regularly haul charter stock about, with or without Pax?..........

I sense that, being British, we like to feel vicitimised but the reality is that this isn't about any particular type or age of traction - the issues are about how traction units and trains are operated, not their DOB or means of providing themselves with forward motion!

At least with steam traction, you can tell whether it is forward or reverse, unlike a box!.........

But in the context of this thread, we are talking about WCRC and their operation which encompasses both forms of traction, neither of which are running at the mo.

As for being British....... I'm ENGLISH and proud of it! :)

Given that is the 12th and it would seem that nothing will happen to raise the suspension on WCRC before the 15th, then imho the chances are as close to zero as makes no difference

uk steam has it as diesel, atleast for the first week, if wcrc get their licence back i would imagine that it would take a day or two to get the steam engines up there so that takes us to 17/5/2015 as the best scenario.hope it happens.

And wasn't there a total stoppage in the London area the other day when passengers were stuck on trains with no power for air con for up to 5 hours.... No steam or charter of any sort in sight....
