I think the owner's incredible generosity in donating the proceeds of the sale to Charity cannot go without being congratulated as well.

Absolutely and too think he has gifted another MK1 Spitfire to IWM Duxford! The American gentleman should be knighted.

The pedant in me always cringes at something being described as "unique" because its "one of only two original... "

Given it's 92 Squadron heritage I really hope this stays in the country. I'd buy it myself but I'm just about £2,000,000 short of the likely asking price. :)

I believe it may be "gentlemen" as the aircraft are/were owned by Mark One Partners.

While the pedant in me agrees, you could argue that this particular aircraft's restoration is unique in that it was a money no object job taking the aircraft back to exactly as it left the factory (even stuff only the pilot gets to see). I doubt there is another one quite like it.

Wasn't N3200 done to exactly the same spec?

Possibly - I didn't think it was, but I'm quite happy to be corrected :)

John Romain was quoted as saying P9374 was the most exacting restoration they had ever done in recent press coverage of the auction (and therefore I guess it would be post N3200 restoration). I know the lengths they went to on P9374 were quite amazing, perhaps it was just easier on N3200 because they knew what they were aiming for.

Is this the one that Guy Martin was being filmed working on last year?

P9374 is the one up for auction. N3200 is the one being donated to IWM Duxford and was the one Guy Martin did a bit of work on.

With all respect Gents who cares? It's got a Merlin engine, it looks like a Spit, it sounds like a Spit and should any Me109 decide to show up, well....

Ref, N3200 is the IWM keeping her in flyable condition ? or will she be grounded and restricted to engine runs only? i think that she should were possible be kept airborne as a memorial to those in 19 squadron who lost their lives i'm sure that that at Duxford amongst the historic collection pilots must be are trusted with a baby spit.

There is a problem with boy racers on my road, so I would prefer the later cannon equipped version.................

She's not the only former 19 Sqd Spitfire currently airworthy but nevertheless I hope she's kept flying.

Don't go for the Mk.1b as the cannons fitted to those were notorious for jamming. It's suggest a Mk.Vb at least.

Talking about the various marks, it still makes me chuckle reading what one pilot flying an mk9 said about the look on a FW 190 pilot's face as he put his aircraft into a sharp climb and overtook him canopy to canopy one of, what the hell !! he shouldnt be doing that
