Not funny if you are crawling up Shap on the Brit with Galatea's efforts painfully visible in the distance.

But who planned for Galatea to go before the Brit?

I know, but just imagine if 60163 had been at the business end? Talk about a dog and a bone!

Whoever planned those paths, they had some imagination. TWO steam specials over Shap, and NEITHER of them running into Carlisle.

Let's be fair about this. Galatea was late out of Carnforth because of a late running FTPE. Harsh to comment on paths given those circumstances. Imagine uproar if either steam charter held up FTPE or VT service.

Up to a point.. But even with a late departure that 5x should have been doing more that 11mph at Shap Summit. 70000 seems to be on song today, any minutes dropped before catching the CCE were down to signal checks (Wigan, Lancaster, Hest Bank to name but three). I'm looking forward to reports of a stirring run from Appleby up to Ais Gill.

Yes, to be fair, Galatea was 6 late across Carnforth North Junction and then managed to drop ten more minutes off her own bat to Penrith through, I'm guessing, no fault of the crew.

Have just spotted on YouTube what might well be one of the rarest video clips for some time. Two steam trains climbing Shap in the same shot. Contrast the exhausts and then say which loco looks in better shape. (That's not intended to be read as an adverse reflection on the WC crew.)

    Brilliant 981 Smithy.

Amazing video. If this doesn't make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up then you have no soul!

Great video thanks but I bet the driver of the train behind the Brit that was brought to a stand was not enjoying the spectacle so much.

An absolutely incredible event!! Were there coal/fire issues with Galatea I wonder? There have been similar problems before. Great to hear Britannia pick up speed on the last mile of Shap - nothing wrong with that loco. Anyway, a fantastic video of something that will probably never be repeated, well captured Phil. Many thanks for sharing.

    cheers,

    Alan
