Just as a one off in this section as it is a unique loco

I have obtained a collection of photos all taken in the 1930’s and early 1940’s of locos of the big 4
These photos are of GWR locos and this photo of Collett Castle class features 1 of only 2 locos streamlined by the GWR

You know, I can't help feeling that Collett never really got the hang of streamlining...

Apparently he thought the whole exercise was pointless and gave it minimal attention.

Mm, probably, but I'm sure it would be mildly interesting to stuff them all in a wind tunnel and see what you get. However the GW engine is starting at a disadvantage anyway because of the larger loading gauge. On the other hand it has rather less lateral area than the bath tub fairings which might be better in some circumstances.

Well, since the GWR mafia are so keen to recreate missing Swindon products, I'm sure that Thornbury Castle could be made available....!

I believe Stanier did test his "rivals'" designs in a wind tunnel as well as his own ideas before finalising the Princess Coronation casing.

We've learned a lot about wind tunnels since then!

I read somewhere he didnt really want to do it so rather than use a special model he used a King(?) paper weight and just covered it with plastecine.

Thanks very much, Tom. And as I meant to say earlier, thanks again to Neildimmer for putting all of these together.

Thanks Tobbes, nice to get some positive comment on this group for the photo collections, all I ever receive is moans and complaints, such as 'its in the wrong section' etc

    regards

    Neil

To be fair, Neil, none of these complaints were aimed at you, all were at the abortion shown in the photo!

I know you have put up a lot of good stuff, and most of us, if not all, appreciate it.

sorry I was not going on about the messages regarding the Castle, I agree it did look a mess, it certainly was not a A4, but with certain people who complain rabidly about me putting photographs in the Steam locos section

The GWR "streamliner" weren't the only ones that looked a tad odd. CG3.jpg
