    The flip side to that statement of course is "what would the aviation preservation scene look like if they had the opportunities for revenue generation through fares available to the railway preservationists!" Such things aren't impossible, but they are clearly more limited.

    Agrees, it's a whole different scenario regarding the number of passengers a train can carry as opposed to how many you can get in a Spitfire.

    Most preserved aircraft would probably be static in museums. The record of enthusiast-group owned airworthy aircraft is not good.

    Possibly something like a Dakota would possibly cover its costs if enough passenger flights could be made in a season.

    The Dragon Rapide's at Duxford presumably make a reasonable contribution to their costs from passengers?

    Beyond that I guess you've got a few two-seat Spitfires and Mustangs, Harvards, Tiger Moths etc that can offer passenger flights; Just Jane that can at least offer taxi rides - anything else in this country?

    The difference between getting a certificate of airworthiness (which is required to carry passengers) and a permit to fly is, I believe, considerable.
    Carrying preservation group members as 'crew' has been frowned upon since the Varsity crash in 1984 and Don Bullocks B-26 crash at Biggin Hill in 1980.

    A-26 to be exact. The B-26 was the Marauder.
    I agree that there are considerable hoops to jump through but flights in Dragon Rapides and Tiger Moths are widely available with such people as Classic Air Force and Classic Wings. These are commercial rather then enthusiast operations of course. The regulations have been relaxed recently regarding selling flights in Warbirds and they seem to be going rather nicely. A snip at around three grand. :)

    The Douglas Invader was re designated 'B-26' in 1948 when the Glenn Martin Marauders had all been withdrawn from service.
    Yes, the regulations have been relaxed a little but I still cannot see an enthusiast group in the Railway Preservation model being able to financially support a passenger carrying twin such as a Dakota.
