most likily because at the time it either would have been to expensive and most likily Island line didnt see a need for it, if they had , it would have been done ,ok now fast foreward, to the landslip, wouldnt it have been cheaper for island line to have hired the 03, 0r 05,(as its already island gauge) and some wagons, to carry materials to the site i would say a case can be made for extending the head shut and having a point, that remains locked and clipped, with the padlock key controlled by st johns road, 0r controled by a colour light at smallbrook on the IOWSR side , and feathers on the NR side if it remains 2 way

If you mean the landslip at Sandown that could be accessed directly from the station - sadly unless they start undertaking some substantial track renewals I can't see much need when road rail machines hauling trolleys of ballast and materials are so versatile.

I made a gratuitous suggestion or two earlier in this thread. Seems like time for another one.

Forget rumblings for another locomotive... You need adequate servicing facilities. if there are routes which are often used and there is a particular loop used for watering 'all the time' then why not spend of building a water tank of modest capacity, say 6,000 gallons and fit a proper water column (9" or 12") to water the locomotives from. It could be mains connected and filled the night before use.

Where you've got turntables, keep 'em in situ and serviceable. Install a pit for inspection and de-ashing. For safety's sake, the pit(s) can have heavy steel plate covers similar to those used on roadworks sites, to be lifted out of the way on arrival and refitted after cleanup. A plate, 6' long, 4' wide and ½" thick should be manageable by four people. A pit 30' long would need five or so of these cover plates.

In the 1950's LMS 4f 0-6-0's regularly took excursion trains of perhaps up to 10 coaches, Bradford - Morecambe only calling at Shipley. Perhaps calling at Hellifield for water. They could clonk along all day.
