    Morning,

Just got these from fleabay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-LB-amp-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Anyone able to shed light (oh dear!) on them? Are they proper ex railway or some knock offs?

A clue is in the price that you paid, but they have never had any connection with the Brighton Line unless, of course, they had been in a "railway" pub! Just as well that you can be philosophical about it.

I was suspicious about that, and the new cable on them, but thought them worth a punt as they look OK anyway-lack of glass still looks good. Any idea if they are based on a real item, or just made up?

I think that they are made up, "fantasy" items. Certainly the LB&SCR never had lamps of this type. These turn up fairly regularly, though not as frequently as the fantasy brass candle lamps, usually marked GWR, though sometimes also other railways, including even SNCF!

It strikes me that with the prices railwayana now fetches (e.g. IMHO the utterly absurd sums paid out for "target" signs) there is an ever increasing danger of faking.

As an example I was looking yesterday at an engraved handbell (which has impeccable provenance) and it struck me that it could be counterfeited by acquiring an elderly handbell and engraving it for a pre-grouping company. Let in some black wax as with the genuine article, distress it a little and there we are.

The motto of the railwayana business being "never give a sucker an even break". Ask around if you are new to a section of the market. The new kid on the block is always going to be a target, what the Cantonese call in mahjong the "fish's belly" to refer to an inexperienced player I.e. soft, easy to get money from.
