You fool Kayto - you should've been more specific!

As for the air pump - reckon - behind the deflectors - & why not, there's room.

I really hope so. I know that they are a necessary evil but Ian Riley, the Tornado folk, the MNLPS, PRLCT and the Lizzie folk all manage to tuck the air pump away somewhat more discreetly than those seen on 5029, 6100, 70000 and 34067. I understand there is a balance to be struck between aesthetics and access/function but the groups detailed above seem to manage!

Rileys fitted the air pump to 5029 during an overhaul around 2000 and the one on Tangmere, which was originally fitted behind the air smoothed casing but was found to overheat due to lack of airflow hence its revised position.

    Hardly...
won't be easy for taking the left hand valve out now. Smoke deflector and air pump to remove before you start on the valve.
6024, 6233, 60163, and the A4's seem to work well with the air pump between the frames, do they not?

You're not wrong there, when SG is fit and healthy and working hard it's a damn fine sight and sound. It did a few SSE's a few years ago, all of Wakefield knew it was in the area, nobody sleeps when that thing is about.:)

I had 46115 over Shap with VT a few years ago, interesting noise when travelling at 50 + with the "loud handle" wide :)

    Straight answer - no!

She was supposed to have been run in on the MHR at the beginning of the year, obviously that never happened.

Pacifics tend not to have a firebox right next to the rear driving axle which helps free up a bit of space
As for 6024 the western region had special measures (chain smoking, amoebic dysentery, iron maidens etc)
in place to ensure a supply of very slim fitters so its not so much of an issue there

I think that the overriding priority with an air pump is to be able to access it easily and regularly plus locating it somewhere there is a measure of protection for it. It is not an item to be left alone simply because of the consequences of it failing or just becoming unreliable. I guess it's then just a matter of choice.

If anything, hearing the characteristic sound of an air pump and seeing puffs of steam coming out (of the chimney or, with some installations, elsewhere), while being unable to see the pump because it is hidden away somewhere, seems worse than having one in plain sight as they normally were on railways that used air braking.
