I read that the North Staffordshire Railway was the first pre grouping company to have all it's mainline locos withdrawn from service.
Many pre grouping tank locos would have been in service until near the complete end of steam as they were designed for specific duties, marshalling yards or lightly laid freight lines.
My question is; which was the last pre grouping main line loco in service on each of the BR regions?
    Thanks in advance.

On the North Eastern either a J27 or a Q6 would be a good bet.

NER Q6s and J27s. LMR Midland Railway tanks at Staveley. ER, probably one of the ex GCR O4s.

What about J72s on the ER (69023 in Departmental service?)

Built in 1951, although to a 54 year old design.

Western region I'd guess at a 28xx from the pregrouping GWR. The NSR certainly didn't do very well for rolling stock survival, I seem to recall only a very small few even saw the second world war.

One of the last of the oldest GWR locos in service (withdrawn March 1963). Looking very well turned out here at the Steam Gala in May 2015. However, Western steam survived until Dec 65 I believe.

The LMS was quite ruthless as far as a number of their constituent company loco fleets were concerned.

The Adams O2's on the Isle of Wight lasted until December 31st 1966 in mainline service and two of them (W24 and W31) until March 1967 in Departmental service, at which point they were 76 and 77 years old respectively.

There were a number of ex-NSR tank locos used in the East Lancashire coalfield until the 1960s, one of which is preserved.

Yes of course, forgot about them. I don't have my books available but IIRC it was Manchester based coal merchant, who bought two or three 'new L' class locos? And of course the battery shunter at Oakamoor that survived into the '60s.

The final NSR locomotive to be withdrawn was BEL 1 - an electric loco that survived at Oakamoor Quarry until 1963; not mainline perhaps but a peculiarly Knotty design and build.

Wainwright C DS239 and DS240 (BR 31271 and 31592) lasted to December 1966 in Departmental service; 31592 made it to August 1967 as a portable steam supply and was then preserved.

data ex John Daniel's GWR archive.

Sadly VOR 7,8 and 9 aren't really pre group locos. 7 and 8 were put in service July 1923, and 9 was really a renewal of the Cambrian locomotive which means that although it kept the same identity and was roughly the same shape and size all significant parts were replaced: a grandfather's axe job.
