In English orthography I think that Akra vower would be closer.

  5. Meanwhile, away from pronounciation one-upmanship and back to the subject of the thread...
In that case I vote for the Lavender Line to extend across the River Uck to immediately west of the Uckfeld bypass, install a runround loop there and a tiny bit of new embankment, so trains can run on to the part-built-before-being-aborted Ouse Valley Railway, with a link to the Bluebell somewhere around Sheffield Park.

This would give the Lavender Line not one but two main line connections, south of Balcombe viaduct and via the Bluebell at East Grinstead. Far easier than piffling about with Lewes or Uckfield, don'cha think?:)

And wasn't one of Colonel Stephens' madder plans a line right across East Sussex?

No - 'vower' is the wrong vowel; 'fair' has the same vowel as English 'fire'

I thought Welsh was completely phonetic so fairly simple to say. 'f' as in 'v', 'ai' as in 'I' and 'r' as in 'r'. ' Vire' would be the nearest English equivalent pronunciation.

It doesn't really matter how you choose to pronounce it as the Llangollen Railway will never be returning there. Within the last two weeks a steel overbridge in Acrefair, which was on the branch from Trevor station to the chemical works, was removed for scrap after being disused for 50 years.
If you want somewhere to pronounce try 'Glyndyfrdwy'
The Llangollen Railway has embarked on Corwen -phase 2, which is less than half a mile long, but involves building of the permanent island platform complete with access subway (it's on top of an embankment), building a new access road for the sewage works, which will hopefully be paid for by others, & filling in the breached embankment where the current access road is located. Then track & signalling etc.

Never say never Bob. Possibly not in your lifetime but i'm only 26. Hopefully i'll have another 50 years involved at Llangollen, and anything could happen in that time.

Not 'dwee' on the end ? That's how I was told to pronounce it. I hope to last for another 20 years , although not on the board !, & I'll bet that we still won't have gone beyond Trevor.

My thought would be to get just a mile or so out of town and build a park and ride facility, much like that at Norden on the Swanage. Then Trevor to link with the aqueduct.

A lot of people say the railway will never go beyond Llan bridge, but the societys original aim to build a railway between Llangollen and Corwen will be coming to an end (hopefully) in 18 months time. What happens then? I'd say ten years or so of sorting out what is already there, and improving on it. Then extending could be looked at once again.

It's not just Welsh names which can be confusing to pronounce. In Railway MAgazine, there was a picture takne on the WCML at Cathiron in Northamptonshire. How is this pronounced? cath-iron, cathy-ron or cath-eye-ron? I'd be interested to know.

Phase 3 is to cross Green Lane & lay track into the original Corwen station , where the platforms still exist ,although the trackbed has been filled in up to platform height.
This would depend on land acquisition & lots of other people's money. The trackbed through to the former goods shed is still empty as well. This can be seen on Google Maps.
The railway has yet to take any official interest in this.
