You know it would be nice if 34067 had a group of people around it like Clan Line.

45407 was the lead loco with 45110 as train loco. I remember it well, although nearer 15 years than 10 years ago?...the train was dispatched 'right time' but the fire on 5110 was not prepped in time. As we hit Hemerdon there was 'green' smoke pouring out of the chimney over 5510's boiler barrel, and boiler pressure about 125 psi.

45407 was down to 3 mph as she hauled 45110 and the train over the summit...........we had many good runs with 45110 and the SVR lads in days gone past ...and tongue in cheek, 45110 became known as "The Caravan" after this tour...the video is on one of the PSOV tapes.

I forgot about that!...must stealth was used, to kidnap the SVR teapot ....a teapot of great magnitude and capable of quenching the thirst of an army!............It was held hostage and photographs of it in many locations about the national network sent back to Bridgnorth messroom...even postcards from holiday locations!..it was of course eventually returned, I wonder if it still exists?...

For a specialist loco like Tangmere that would be ideal. The sole loco of a group that have and kept intact the necessary expertise. Sadly Mike we don't live in an ideal world, but I am sure that every effort is currently made to try and keep it in decent operational condition.

I'll think you'll find the support crew for 34067 do a fantastic job keeping the engine up together and on the rails, yes it had problems last night but they will no doubt get on top of the problem and get it sorted!!

My brother and I were in the second coach at the window and as speed fell away I can remember seeing someone on 45407 frantically beckoning 45110 on. I have traveled many times behind steam on Hemerdon but this was the closest I ever came to a stall. Ian confirms that the speed dropped to 3mph. I thought it was slow but not that slow!! It says everything about 45407 that she managed to get the train over the top virtually single handed. Was the load 12? I seem to recall it was which makes the feat even more spectacular.

I have the PSOV video and will watch it later. Can't believe it was 16 years ago!

  8. Perhaps one of the most awful steam videos I have seen in a long time, and I have seen a few!

Was only ever driven by approved drivers who had extra tuition on the nymr due to the loco's unique characteristics. Perhaps something to consider with Tangmere?

I know of someone fantastic who is doing a fabulous job on Flying Scotsman and keeps his 5's in superb condition. Tangmere needs a new home.

Just to take this point, there seem to be loads of Bulleids "nearing" a mainline return. Off the top of my head 34092, 34027 and 35018 with presumably 35028 to come. What's the news on 34046? Also, wasn't 35027 supposed to be being lined up for the mainline as well?

Maybe, as someone else said, Tangmere is just cursed and needs to exit stage left and tour the preserved lines.

Well you can take one off that list. 34027 is most definitely not going mainline, certainly not for the foreseeable future.

Was this The Mayflower on 15th August 1999? If so I caught them on video towards the bottom of Hemerdon.

It also explains how I managed to get to Exminster in time to see them again.
    (Sorry to keep off post).

Unfortunately not. The only reason air brakes were retained was so there was a working air braked steam loco to work with incoming charter stock. Shame mind as was always a good one on the mainline.

I have my concerns about 35018 as well and hasn't even gone out on the mainline.

While curses are utter nonsense, the loco sat down on debut and has had more than its fair share of high profile issues thereafter.
Close quarters TLC by renowned experts would be the best way forward.
