Are you going to replace the "Turkish" smokebox door during the cosmetic restoration? As shipped, the locos did have a Stanier smokebox door.

Not during the cosmetic restoration as this would come at a cost during a time when all funding needs to pay for the loco. However when the overhaul does begin we will be replacing the monstrosity with a proper wrapper/door.

It would have also been a 45/1 joking aside I've always thought 48773's history is pretty intresting. Really cant believe the NRM didnt stake a claim for the one that went to Israel. I'll say it again you have race horses and work horses. The Stanier 8F is a cracking example of a work horse. I cant wait to see this one in action!. Diamonds are Forever...

Being restored as the Turkish 8F it is presumably retaining its Turkish number - which the poster presumably neither realised or understood.

BKR Ross: Point taken. As you rightly say, paying for it is the first priority.

Just as a matter of interest, did you get a choice of either repatriated loco, or had the other one already been sold on to Israel?

The other had been already been sold. We were approached by the owner after the society had shown interest in bidding for the loco (but did not in the end).

However, it is acknowledged that 45170 is in far better condition than the one that went back out of the UK was as parts such as the tender were swapped between the two locos to create the best possible candidate for restoration to working order.

The appeal has now steamed past £71000. Given this has been raised without using other society funds, the 45170 team are very grateful and proud of this achievement! If anyone would like to make a contribution please see BTdonate page at: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/stanier8f/190986

Sorry if I missed it, but what is the overall target/estimate to return to full working order?

Around £120,000 to buy the locomotive and transport it to Bo'ness and provide a small budget to undertake cosmetic work. It is then estimated (only that as we haven't taken the loco to bits yet) that an overhaul to working condition will cost in the region of £250,000+. So £370,000+ as an estimate for the whole project.

As a condition of the purchase, the society agreed internally that society funds from the 'general fund' would not be used in the purchase of the loco so as not to put other projects, such as the overhauls of 419 and the construction of a new steam shed & station extension at risk. So the team working on the 45170 Appeal are working solely on direct donations to the project and the sale of merchandise, meaning that any contribution is greatly appreciated! Donations can be made online at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/stanier8f/190986.

A poster for our open day three weeks today, and subsequent evening talk with the team that brought the locomotive back from Turkey can be found below:

The paperwork has been signed and 45170 is now fully in the ownership of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society! Thank you to everyone who donated, but we're not stopping here as we begin to fundraise the restoration costs!

We're having a open day at Bo'ness on the 1st April - all welcome!

Are you SURE that's necessarily the best date for an open day....?

Three years in and over £150,000 raised. To say we are grateful is an understatement! It is probably the most successful appeal in the society's history.

The hard work starts now - we have quotes to fit new tender tyres from multiple contractors, have obtained a full set of set of drawings for the loco and are due delivery of a brand new Stanier Style smokebox door with all the trimmings from David Wright imminently.

It is planned that the tender will move in the next week or two into the shed to be overhauled as a 'background' project for staff and volunteers, focusing mainly on 419, whilst funds are raised to overhaul the actual locomotive. Any donations most welcome at: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/stanier8f/190986

Thank you for your continued support!

Great news, well done to all involved for this project on one of my favourite types of loco. Old enough to remember them at the tail end of steam in Lancashire!

45170's tender moved to our running shed today (due to a lack of space in the soon to be replaced Romney Hut) for overhaul. Work should start in the next few weeks - the tank will receive welding repairs to the baffles and some plate work, the wheels will be removed and re-tyred, the axles boxes, horn guides & journals examined and repaired where needed, and the tender frames will be stripped, examined and painted.

Thanks to all who have donated - without your help we wouldn't have gotten this far. If funds keep flowing we hope to finish the tender in the next 18 months and then raise funds to overhaul the loco itself! If anyone would like to contribute you can do so at: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/stanier8f/190986 23192373_1716985668346489_299320219_o.jpg
