Following another thread reguarding the restoration of a Bulleid third brake coach by the Mid Hants Railway. What other lines are currently looking at bringing their stock undercover? I am aware of the Bluebell, and the IOW has just opened its magnificent Train Story shed.

With increasingly changable weather patterns the countrys Heritage Fleet are mostly left to the elements. The cost of storage sheds (with hopefully fire protection ) must be huge, but balance that against the decrease in mainance, plus the tidying up of sites to visitors must be a payback as well.

If access (on special occasions) is allowed then a donation could be asked for inorder to tour the collection that is now hidden away for those like me who interested in these things.

I believe the NYMR is trying to get shed at Pickering for its service vehicles - 61624 should be able to provide more details....

The Pickering carriage shed is progressing. A site has been identified and terms of a long lease agreed. During August an accurate survey of the site is being carried out so that a detailed track plan can be drawn up. Once that is done it will be a case of preparing a planning application and (not least!) finding the funding, so it is probably 2-3 years away yet. The site owners seem to be opposed to regular public access, which probably will make funding rather harder.

The intention is to provide cover for both service vehicles and carriages awaiting restoration, the latter being a carrot to the Pickering Council who would love to see the long siding emptied of what they would term "wrecks" and we would describe as having future potential!

The RPSI already has a carriage shed at Whitehead (built 1992) which covers approx 12 carriages. The shed is currently being extended and a visitor area added. The newly enlarged building should be able to hold all RPSI vintage carriages and the MK2 running set.

Severn Valley have that massive carriage shed at Kidderminster.

West Somerset have plans for their coaches (GW only?) to go undercover at BL I believe.

The Dean Forest have long term ambitions for a carriage shed at Lydney Jcn.

North Norfolk have a shed for their Quad Arts at Holt.

Though there are a few things other than carriages in it, 5764 for instance and I think at least 2 08s.

Every time I go past I'm still amazed at the size of it! However doesn't it suffer from condensation problems?

GWSR has plans for one at Winchcombe in the medium term future, although at various different points in time it's been planned to be all over the place!

Not noticed any condensation problems myself but I only have infrequent cause to go in.
Regards size, how you encountered the new Diesel shed? The carriage shed is long, while that is BIG!

We used to have condensation problems with our PW Shed at Newbridge on the NYMR.
Often used to be lines of drips falling from the purlins.
Cured that by spray foam insulation.
Expensive but worth it. 2 roads by 45m came out at about £15K
Biggest problem now is the heat if you are working above 10ft.

We have that problem in our new paintshop. I certainly notice the difference when I come up and down a ladder in the summer; those who work on roofs say it is even worse.

IMHO we need to be putting as much stuff undercover as possible, especially the 'pre BR' rolling stock

I think we're all in agreement with you there johnofessex but several railways find it difficult enough restoring and maintaining carriages. The difficulty is added to when the finance to build the desirable accommodation is not easily obtained. I think such railways need to start saving for one though.

The new carriage storage shed at Rolvenden KESR is intended to slow the deterioration to stock caused by the weather.

It is just for storage of restored stock not currently in service, and was financed by a generous contribution from the RVR. This picture is from the RVR's website.

Four roads, each long enough for five bogie coaches. Structurally complete, and all track laid. Full signalling of the connection from the mainline will take a while longer, but once in use it will make a difference to the progress of
    Tenterden C&W.

Didcot has a carriage shed. Long term plan to enlarge it. ( is two sheds in one).
SVR might even end up with a wagon shed.........:)

RVP have funded and built a shed at Swithland on the GCR which is primarily aimed at getting the Gresley fleet under cover, hopefully allowing restored vehicles to last longer between re-varnishing and unrestored ones to fall apart at a slower pace which will aid their eventual restoration. I believe it will hold 12 vehicles across the 4 roads. It's a start...

Looking at the vehicle outside the Rolvenden building.
It seems like it might become a Tramm Shed. :)

When do the overhead wires go in?

Tramm, ballast regulator, two tampers. Working under cover some of the time. The building was expensive, but the associated trackwork was extensive, and without the plant (owned by p/w volunteers) it would have taken a lot longer. The diagram above shows how much track work was needed to service this new shed.

I note that Google Earth has updated views of the Rolvenden site. Clearly showing the extent of the track alterations.
