That location never worked like that for me....:(. Great shot David with SG clagging nearly as much as Tangmere, but looking again, Tangers doesn't manage to lift her exhaust clear of the boiler like that...

Many thanks Ralph. To be honest, this is the most impressive thing I've ever seen at Brock. I didn't hold out much hope, just an end of the day shot near home, so was pleasantly surprised. The Barton stop certainly means they're still getting up to speed at this point.

45690 and 45231 seem out of the mix. Hearing about Leander's boilers issues made me think about issues like those that took her out of service resulting in an earlier overhaul.

It's certainly become a workhorse this summer and without any in traffic failures.

About an hour before the Fellsman was due at Hoghton the heavy overnight rain was replaced by sunshine. SG could be heard for 2 or 3 minutes before she came into view; the sound being carried towards us on a fresh SW wind. SG was going well at the summit RT and looked and sounded spot on. For the "Clagites" the exhaust was clearly visible as the steam condensed in the cool morning air (15C).

There's not a lot better to be seen on the mainline when SG is running well. It has had quite a successful season on the Fellsman which if I have read correctly, will be its final few months in traffic. I believe its ticket runs out in December, is this correct??

Certainly an engine that has had an more than its fair share of ups & downs during it's first real stint of mainline running.

Lets hope for a speedy return once its ticket runs out.

Not sure whether that's a good assumption or not. Carnforth locos don't seem to stick to the "traditional" patterns. New boiler tickets have sometimes been issued after 5 or 6 years if that coincided with major mechanical work (e.g. Tangmere), while others have had extensions beyond 7 years. SG has had several long periods out of service, so maybe the boiler was re-inspected and re-certified during one of those?
    Hear, hear!

Exactly so. There was report in early 2014 that winter boiler work had resulted in an extension IIRC. The boiler will have to have an out of frames examination fairly soon though if it was last done in 2007.

My understanding was a mainline certificate was for 7 years with remedial work allowing for a further 12 month extension but no more. Following that a full strip down to basic to the component parts was then required....?

Nice to see an on time run on the northern leg today.

If I recall rightly Steamage above is quite right that the pattern can be different, ie. as actually happened with Tangmere.
