The intention is for it to be in service for the 15 guinea special anniversary -or at least it was. Turn around times are looking a bit tight now.

I'm struggling to follow that. The Fifteen Guinea Special was 11th August 1968, so the 47th anniversary is past; the 48th is over eleven months away and the fiftieth three years away.

    What am I missing?

Sorry, that's not very clear is it? I'm referring to the 50th anniversary which, as you say, is just under 3 years from now.

My point about that being a bit tight to have the five back in service is only opinion, but given that we have four large locos under overhaul at the moment (7802, 4930, 75069 and your own 2968), only one of which is approaching the end stages, the five is surely unlikely to see any significant attention until one of the standard and the hall are complete. You're then looking towards 2017 for progress on the 5, are you not?

Hopefully it won't be like last time where the orginal plan was to have it in service for the 25th Anniversary (1993) but it over ran and actually entered service in 1998!

Of course, it depends on how much work is expected for each and whether it is agreed to prioritise the 5 due to the approaching anniversary.

Yep, as with all overhauls there are plenty of caveats.

I'd suggest it might be quite difficult for the railway to justify prioritising the overhaul of its own loco ahead of those done in conjunction with owning groups with whom they have agreements.

Fingers crossed, I'd quite like to see it back in traffic!

Seem to have caused a thread drift again, oops!
Any sign of the lesser spotted Royal Scot?

Sorry - my fault. I got a bit excited at the prospect of 45110 in steam again in the not-too-distant future. Still, the thought of 46100 in action ought to be enough to keep everyone happy for the time being.

To be pedantic, If you want preserved you would have to put up with knackered, scruffy, dirty and mostly black. As it was withdrawn. If you want it in any other flavour, you need to recreate it.

As withdrawn, probably but not necessarily. But even as late as 1966 steam locos were appearing ex-works from Crewe, and it wasn't unknown for steam engines to be cleaned to the bitter end. Admittedly, they were generally cleaned by the MNA, but they were cleaned.

Photo call before Duchess headed up to Rugby this afternoon, perhaps? After all, having a Princess Coronation and a Royal Scot on shed together at Crewe is not quite as common as it once was, so worth a couple of quick pics ;-)
