Doesn't a museum have a responsibility to the historical integrity of its own collection though - it's not there simply as a ready source of spare parts to satisfy the demands of fickle enthusiasts. I'd suggest that if a to-be-preserved MN needs a new cylinder or crank axle, those responsible for the overhaul can make their own: given what has been achieved in preservation by other groups, neither task sounds insurmountable.

Also in the National Collection: Columbine, Cecil Raikes, the NSR 0-6-2T, and Bauxite. There is also a select group of engines which have worked in preservation but which have not worked since entering the National Collection, such as Cornwall, the Hetton loco, and Teesside No.5.

Especially when you consider the cost of uninstalling Ellerman Lines from her display area, moving her, stripping her down, overhauling the required part, cosmetically restoring the damaged part from the other loco, reassembling Ellerman Lines, moving her back to York, and reinstalling her.

I wasn't intending Barry wrecks/partially restored to be included. Their situation is fairly obvious.

Although it is technically, belonging to National Museums Merseyside & as such is part of the national collection, though not the N.R.M. part.

Its custodians are far less enlightened than the NRM as Cecil has not been on public view for many years.

    Bit more "waffle".
I think the "good" cylinder on 35029 is the wrong one for 35010.
The sectioned one is the same side as 35010's damaged one.

Where is Cecil now? I presume the major still resides in Australia?

City of Birmingham has been locked away since BR days; although with the amount of asbestos warnings on it now it won't be long before they need to do large amounts of work on it to make it safe!

G.E.R. "Coffeepot" no.229 has been cosmetically restored and on display, but has not steamed in preservation.
