On the contrary there was no mention of the suggestion that either was a vanity project in those two posts. Therefore, IMHO, a reasoned, and reasonable, rebuttal of the allegation was in order. :)

Just finished 2 days back to back on 3850. Sadly my last 2 turns firing this fine engine. Yes the ride behind is a bit jerky, it's a freight loco for goodness sake, but a great plodder.
If it feels jerky behind you should try it of the footplate at 25 mph, particularly when running tender first! :)
I for one will miss the old girl and hope to see her return one day, I know the door is open to the possibility so fingers crossed.:Jawdrop:

I was in a carriage behind it today and it certainly was a jerky ride. I heard several passengers complaining about "the poor driving". :( Nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon out with glorious weather and wonderful countryside. I noticed Robin White hard at work clearing her garden of foliage next to Stogumber Station. A very pleasant contrast to what is going on behind the scenes. :)

I appreciate 3850 is a freight loco and that some people love it but if the ride is jerky and someone like me, a bit of a railway nut, avoids it wherever possible because it makes me feel queasy, how many of our valuable fare-paying passengers simply walk away, not to return to any steam railway, because they assume that all steam trains have that effect?

I thought that the jerky ride could be mitigated by loosening off the shackle a bit?

Re 3850, over tightening the shackle does not help with the jerky ride.
My advice for those seeking smoother passage is always to sit at the back of the train.
I will however be sure to tell the driver about his poor driving the next time I see him!!! I should add that we were not assisted yesterday by a sticky DA valve on the brakevan which was dropping train-pipe vacuum like a stone on some occasions and causing a bit of drag.

There was talk about the S&D Trust lease not been renewed about 3 years ? ago and using their site as the PW depot to free up Dunster to return it as a goods yard for the vintage wagons.

In my experience it tends to happen when coasting down a grade when the speed is in the 20-25 MPH range.
I remember all the 42XX tank loco's also behaving like this.
But I can not remember 3850 doing it when fresh from overhaul, it will be interesting to see if the SVR 28XX does it at the gala.

2857 does present the same for and aft movement, thanks to the long throw in common with all the gw 8 coupled locos ( I would guess the Night Owl will not have such an issue as I understand they were balanced for high speed running?). '57 isn't as bad as some I have experienced (3802 and 2807 especially noticeable of the 28/38's in my experience) but she's bad enough to be last choice for the Severn Valley limited turn on account of all the wasted soup!
