The canopies went in 1978 when the government took over the steam railway - sadly it was the start of the destruction of the railways on the Island - very sad.

I think the destruction of the railways dates back a bit further than that.

I thought the lines to Peel and Ramsey were lost in the 50s . I maybe wrong as my interest in this railway is only recent .

Many thanks guys , I'm learning all the time . I used to visit IOM many years ago on two wheels but recently spent two weeks house hunting , yes , we are coming " across" hopefully before Xmas .
Whilst I was over earlier , I was impressed with the footplate crews and the way they handled the locos . I am familiar with herritage railways on the big island and they use volunteer crews in the main . As good as they are they aren't full time crews whereas the crews I saw on the IOM Railway were full time employees . Admittedly they might drive buses or trams when they are not on the footplate but they look to me to do a very good job .
Yes , it would be good if there were lines still running to Peel and Ramsey but I do think we have to be thankful for small mercies , thank you Isle of Man Government .
