Thanks for the explanation Mr V class, that certainly sounds plausible.

Edit. Forgot to say - welcome to the forum Mr V class, hours of fun and laughter ahead for you!!

    Cheers,

That" electric motor" whine is quite pronounced in some of the video footage. Could it possibly be that the tender has been fitted with an axle driven alternator/generator to top up the onboard batteries for the electronic gubbins the loco requires for mainline use?

Rather implausible I know, but what explanation is there for that "electric whine" ?

Presumably there's an electric generator of some sort to supply all the electronic gubbins, but I don't think such a sound has been noticed from other locos working on the main line recently. Anyway I thought it had been explained as a short-term result of tyre-turning -- or was that for a different sound?

There's also the squeak: I look forward to an explanation of that some someone who knows.

Can I refer at least the last 3 posts regarding the 'whine' to #552, where it is explained adequately, I seem to remember this subject and subsequent answer, having been raised before, I think on this very forum, the whine did disappear with the machining marks on the tyres.

No wish to disagree with others who have a greater knowledge of this issue, but I find it strange.
To produce a whirring noise you would expect there to be small ridges or serrations across the tyre tread in contact with the rail surely?

Yet when you see the process of tyre turning on a wheel lathe, the tool takes off metal along the circumference of the tyre, and images of a set of freshly turned wheels show a particularly smooth surface.

So what exactly are these so-called "machining marks" ?

Not knowing exactly where the wheels were turned, or on what machine, but on some older machines you get a repetition of the gear train drive to the faceplate repeated on the machined O/D of the tyre.

The whine will of course fade into insignificance when 46100 is hauling 11+ coaches up several miles of 1 in 100 at 50+ mph, should be making a significant roar from the front end whilst performing said task - I can't wait to witness it!!

    Cheers,

    Alan

What a sight and absolutely nothing from the motion as she passes.

It reminds me of when, as a child, I would go to watch the running in turn for the ex Works Bulleids after a major overhaul (or after rebuilding). It was a Bournemouth service due in at around 8.20 in the evening. All you got as the train drifted silently by in the suburbs was a whiff of hot, smoky oil and occasionally the smell of new paint and varnish. Quite unlike anything else.

They are not a series of parallel turned rings around the circumference or the wheel, it is a helix, starting at the outside edge, working toward the wheel flange, therefore when you draw a line round the circumference, parallel to the outside edge, it will cross the ridges of that helix a number of times, dependant on the pitch of the feed, giving the effect of ridges across the tyre.

I understand the loco crew have been spoken to about this whirring noise, and in their opinion it is nothing to do with the wheel treads.

Whatever, it is known about, and will therefore be monitored.

Moving on, lets hope for some decent weather on the Valley later in the week. Looking foreward to this Gala.

A miserable morning weather wise, but good to see 46100 on it's first train since overhaul, some photos:

I spoke to one of the fitters that accompanied the loco whilst on test and he confirmed that the whirring like sound was from the newly turned tyres.

    Cheers

Nice set of photos Alan - thanks for sharing them. Good to see 46100 is allowed different headboards - I was beginning to think we were stuck with that 'Icons of Steam' thing!

Wonder if it'll wear the headboard the 10am from Euston used to carry?

Thanks for the kind remark Mike. Hear what you say about the headboard, I was hoping for headboard free day today, but.....

    Cheers

Hopefully, with the SVR "The Royal Scot" set.

Any ideas what sets its due to work with? It'd go well with the LMS set or the Blood and Custard Mk1 set

Sorry Matt, I don't know the rosters for the next week and Gala, maybe it will be heading the LMS set then.

    Cheers,

    Alan
